It’s nearly time for classes to start again. But if your kids have got a case of the back to school blues, why not clear them up with a family weekend away? The summer events haven’t stopped yet – in fact there are all sorts of fun things going on in September. Here are some of the highlights:
Egremont Crab Fair, 21st September
Kids are brilliant at pulling funny faces. But who knew they could actually put that skill to use and win a competition with it? Egremont Crab Fair and Sports, founded all the way back in 1267, includes the world gurning championships, in which the UK’s best funny-face pullers flock to compete. Stay in our Cockermouth hotel and you’ll be just a short drive from a hilarious weekend event. Other activities include an apple parade, a vintage car rally, festival and food stalls, as well as sports competitions. Don’t miss out on this unique event.
World Stone Skimming Championships, 29th September
Stone skimming has kept many a child occupied for hours on end at the beach. But if you think you’ve perfected your talent, why not put it to the test at the World Stone Skimming Championships in Scotland at the end of the month? Easdale Island is a long way north, but it makes a beautiful destination for a UK break away, and is within reach of a stay at our Fort William hotel. Plus, it’ll be full of lots of people having fun on the shores for the last weekend of August.
Blackpool Illuminations, whole of September
The last weekend in August is the impressive Switch On weekend in Blackpool, which features concerts from the likes of The Script, Little Mix, and Paloma Faith, as well as being hosted by Jonathan Ross. After the opening weekend, for the rest of Autumn, the Blackpool Illuminations will be lit up and on display for all to see. Children will love the enchanting and eclectic light shows, so book a room in one of our Blackpool hotels to see the illuminations.
The Braemar Gathering, 7th September
September is highland games season, so there’s no better time to venture up north and sink yourself and your family into all things Scottish. One of the oldest and biggest highland games gatherings happens at The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park in Braemar, and if you attend, you’ll find yourself in the company of the Queen, who is a patron of the event. Stay in our Aberdeen Central hotel for the first weekend of September to join in the royal Scottish fun.
Agatha Christie Festival, 15th – 22nd September
If your kids are in to dressing up and maybe playing a bit of murder mystery, they will love the Agatha Christie festival on the English Riviera this month. With so many events, from readings and plays, to dress-up parties and steam train rides, the whole program promises to captivate the imagination. Take your family to our Torquay hotel to join in the mischief.
