Your Guide to Quirky Whitby

Fish and chips aside (you don’t mess with some things), a quirky take on the classic seaside jaunt is a much-needed antidote for many of us. Which is why a trip to the wonderful town of Whitby should be on your bucket list.

A fishing boat-rich, ruin-topped seaside port in North Yorkshire, Whitby looks at first to be just a picturesque destination. But go beneath the surface and what you’ll find will surprise and delight you.

From its connections to Captain Cook and Bram Stoker’s Dracula, to the 1970s Music Festival and Gothic architecture, there really is more than meets the eye when it comes to Whitby.

So why don’t you take a look at our guide below, book a room at our Whitby Travelodge and begin your Yorkshire coast adventure!

Sherlock’s Coffee Shop, 10 Flowergate

Looking for a cream tea in a Sherlock Holmes-themed café? Well, it’s elementary my dear Watson, head to Sherlock’s Coffee Shop in Whitby.

Not only are the cakes, sandwiches and drinks to die for, but you can lounge surrounded by quirky Victorian décor reminiscent of everyone’s favourite sleuth. And the best bit? There’s absolutely no link between Whitby and Sherlock – random or what?

Museum of Victorian Science

Sticking with the 1900s theme, next stop is the Museum of Victorian Science. Think more Dr Frankenstein than Dr Watson when it comes to this Whitby attraction though, with some, shall we say, interesting medical methods on show.

From Geissler tubes to early x-ray, Jacob’s Ladder to implements that look more like tools of torture – this is one journey through time that’ll make the NHS look like a day trip.

And if you’re feeling a little faint after all that, why not check into our Whitby Travelodge for some much-needed bed rest.

Whitby Dracula Experience, 9 Marine Parade

We couldn’t speak about Whitby without mentioning Bram Stoker’s Dracula so how about a bit of terror with your fish and chips?

The town’s Dracula Experience takes you on a unique journey though the Dracula story and its link to this sleepy seaside resort. Prepare for a rip-roaring ride through the tale with interactive scenes, special effects and live actors. You’ll be looking over your shoulder as you navigate the narrow lanes after this one.

Fossil Hunting on Whitby Beach

You know those rock-like things shaped like spiral shells? You’ll find plenty of these ammonites on Whitby Beach and along the cliffs. They don’t call this area the Dinosaur Coast for nothing. Take the perfect excuse for a long walk in the brisk air as the waves crash on shore.

St Mary’s Church

If you take the famed 199-step climb to Whitby Abbey on the East Cliff (one of the best photo settings in the UK and Bram Stoker’s inspiration), don’t miss St Mary’s. Decorated inside with wonky carved woodwork, it’s a place to soak up the feeling of a Yorkshire of old. The cemetery is worth a stroll too: pure Gothic eeriness, but beautiful.

So what are you waiting for? Get booking a room in our Whitby Travelodge now and see how exciting a seaside holiday can be!
