5 Things To Do In York

iStock_yorksignsOne of my favourite cities to visit for some time away from home is York. It has the perfect balance of shopping, great food, bars and the most amazing architecture and attractions for all ages.

If you’re heading out to the city during the early morning, make sure you try and grab a table at one of the two Betty’s Cafe and Tearooms for breakfast. The larger one is found in St Helens Square and if you’re lucky enough to get a window seat it’s a great place to sit and watch the world go by whilst indulging in some stunning scones, sandwiches and cakes. Thinking of heading out for an evening meal? Tucked away in a little corner is 31 Castlegate where you will find a little something for everyone – I recommend the brownie for dessert, it’s simply delicious! For the more exotic taste buds, the Mumbai Lounge serves the most amazing curry dishes.

During the day, there is so much to see and do around the city. The shopping aspect of York has always been something that has drawn me in. You will find all of the usual high street shops such as Topshop/Topman, Zara and Urban Outfitters but also many others to feed your fashion needs. Try Ark Clothing, Sarah Coggles and Levi’s. Give yourself time to search every little corner of the city, as one day I discovered an amazing vintage shop, Purple Haze, while taking a stroll in a new area. You never know what you might come across in this magical city.

If you’re a lover of scenery and architecture, the first place I would recommend would be the York Minister. You can’t miss the huge, beautiful cathedral that is located in the centre of the city. It’s such a stunning building both inside and out.

Fancy a bit of history? Head to the Jorvik Viking Centre (situated near Fenwicks). This is a great attraction and a chance to learn about the past. Particularly suitable to families with young children. Whilst venturing through time, you can learn about how the Jorviks lived and hear more of their fascinating story.

When it comes to the night life, York has plenty to offer. Without a doubt, The Evil Eye Lounge is a place that everyone over 18 should visit. It’s an odd looking shop that you venture through to reveal the coolest and most unique cocktail bar you could set your feet in. The list of cocktails is endless and the super cool ambiance makes it a night to remember. There are pubs on almost every corner but The Stone Roses near The Grand Opera House is another great place to relax and have a drink, or a dance if you fancy it…

The things to do in York really are endless, there is so much more to see every time you visit! Make sure you book your stay at one of our Travelodge hotels in York to make the most of it.
