24 hours in Sheffield

iStock_SheffieldGardens.JPGWeekend trips away are the perfect tonic to the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and while visiting cities abroad and exploring further afield is great, it’s not always easy to do it on a budget, which is why staying in Britain is becoming more and more popular. In fact, many of us have seen very little of this beautiful little island beyond our home towns or the ‘major’ cities.

With that in mind, here’s the ideal 24 hours in what is one of England’s most charming and vibrant destinations, a place known to many as the Steel City; Sheffield. If this whets your whistle, why not take a look at one of our hotels in Sheffield and get booking!

1. A morning at the Sheffield Botanical Gardens

After breakfast, stroll down to the picturesque Botanical Gardens where you can enjoy the glorious 19-acre haven which is hidden at the very heart of the busy city.

First created in 1836, this Grade II English heritage site boasts beautiful listed buildings and glass pavilions that stand out as an architectural delight.

2. Shop till you drop in the Devonshire Quarter

Just west of the city centre, the Devonshire Quarter is an alternative shopping destination for those that love an eclectic mix of shops, cafes and bars.

It’s the ultimate in cosmopolitan retail and an area with real character. As well as the usual restaurants and shops, there’s a spa, some great cafes and independent fashion boutiques. Devonshire Green also offers an area where you can sit out on the grass and soak up the atmosphere.

3. Enjoy dinner at The Church House

After exploring Sheffield you’ll have worked up a good appetite so why not try The Church House for some of the best food in the Steel City?

An establishment that prides itself on using only the finest local produce, The Church House also offers real local ales, which pair perfectly with the sumptuous food on offer.

Expect seasonal fruit and vegetables, the finest meats from local farms and cheeses aged to perfection just down the road. This really is a restaurant you simply cannot miss.

4. Finish the night at a show or gig

Famous for the World Snooker Championships (as it offers a view of the performance area from three different sides) the Crucible Theatre also offers fantastic plays and musicals all year round.

If music is more your thing, why not finish your day with a gig at the O2 Academy Sheffield, where the great and good of pop, rock and alternative music have cut their teeth.
