Cotswolds Hikes to Remember

If you were to ask anyone to paint a picture of the green fields of the UK – the rolling hills, dry stone walls and farmhouses – they would pick a particular scene on this little island.

A world away from the smoke and smog of the UK’s cities, the Cotswolds are synonymous with British picture-postcard beauty, and rightly so. The stunning rural surroundings of the area are coupled with a burgeoning reputation for food, shopping and things to do – so what’s not to love?

But to truly experience the Cotswolds, you have to walk their well-trodden paths. So, with that in mind, dust off those walking boots and unfold that map because here are the best hikes the Cotswolds have to offer.

1. Source at Sapperton

City slickers missing home (not sure how they could in the Cotswolds!) can take the Sapperton walk to see the actual source of the River Thames. In the summer you’ll have to navigate the mud, but that’s all part of the fun.

Sapperton village itself is tiny, but no less camera-worthy than the nature you’ll see along its trail over the River Frome and Daneway Bank. Why not make base at our nearby Cirencester Travelodge? That way you’re in just the right place for  hikes to neighbouring villages like Bibury and the Ampneys.

2. Conquering the Cotswolds

The area’s moderate slopes and clear paths make it the ideal place for walkers of all ages and abilities, but maybe you’re looking for a challenge. Then we’ve got just the route for you.

If climbing a slope of 277 metres sounds like your idea of a fun afternoon, look no further than Bredon Hill. Not only is this an ascent to test your mettle, at the top you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the Malvern Hills and Avon Valley.

At the end of your hike up, the quaint village of Bredon is where you want to enjoy a well-earned cup of tea after conquering your very own summit.

What’s more, our Tewkesbury Travelodge is a mere two miles away: the perfect distance for a warm down walk (or you could just get the bus!).

4. Rub shoulders with royalty (well, almost)

If it’s a brush with the royals you’re after, then a Tetbury walk is your best bet. Along the way you’ll enjoy the outskirts of Highgrove, the rural getaway for none other than Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

If you’re hiking in spring, then make an appointment to see the Highgrove Gardens. Here you’ll find classic and endangered British flowers, trees and veg in a peaceful setting. Perfect for budding botanists and beauty-seekers alike.

Or take to the forests and find your own Cotswolds blooms. The woods are full of flowering wild garlic in spring.

Why not make a weekend of it? Book our Cheltenham Travelodge and roam the beautiful spa town after your fit hill walks.
