The best things in life are free

One of the things we tend to forget about London, is that a lot of its best sights and attractions are absolutely free.

Close your eyes and think of London, what do you imagine? The chimes of Big Ben – free. Changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace – free. Street performers at Covent Garden – all totally free.

That’s before we even go into the endless, world-renowned free museums such as the Victoria & Albert near Knightsbridge – where the permanent collection won’t cost you a penny (donations aside).

London’s at its iconic best when you’re simply left to roam its streets and drink in its majesty.

A room, and a view

So you want to see London from a viewpoint like no other. We don’t blame you, it’s a sight to behold. But rather than heading straight for the tourist-heavy London Eye, why not at least consider options which’ll be way kinder on your wallet.

A single fare on the Emirates Air Line – a Thames-crossing cable car taking in some of the capital’s most iconic buildings – costs just £4.50 (£2.30 for kids). It’s an absolute snip when you compare it to the £21 you’ll splash out for a ride on the Eye.

Better still, if you decide that views are best enjoyed for free, there are several great vantage points from where to get a glorious view of the city.

Primrose Hill is simply stunning on a clear day, offering crisp panoramic views of the London’s financial district in all its glory, and only a relative stone’s throw from our Marylebone hotel.

Go for gold

A great way to become a part of London’s iconic landscape, without going over budget, is to take a trip down to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park site, home of course to one of the most successful Games ever, in 2012.

What you may not know is that almost all of the landmark venues which catered for it are actually open – and at very reasonable prices – to the public.

Channel your inner Sir Chris Hoy at the Lee Valley Velopark where activity prices start from just £6 for adults. The BMX track has been adapted from the one used in the Games – while the indoor track is said to be the fastest in the world.

For something slightly more relaxing, head to the London Aquatics Centre, a joy even if you’re not planning to get wet in its high-spec 50-metre pool. From just £2 for entry, it’s worth a morning out for the futuristic architecture alone, which includes a second, concealed underground pool.

Grab a Boris Bike

Talk about a value guided tour… you can hire a so-called ‘Boris Bike’ for as little as £2 and even pick your own route.

Known as Santander Cycles, it’s London’s self-service bike-sharing scheme for short journeys, and a great way to see the city while getting yourself from A to B.

You won’t need to book; simply hire it, ride it and return it to any on-street docking station, using a touch screen and your bank card.

The first 30 minutes of every journey is free once the £2 access fee is paid – so you’d be hard pushed to rack up too much of a charge on this affordable and fun way to see the capital.
