Great Scottish Road Trips

There are parts of the UK that sometimes get forgotten because they’re not the most accessible. Scotland has vast areas of beautiful natural scenery that go undiscovered by many people who stick to easy public transport routes. But if you’re thinking of doing something a bit different for a holiday, why not plan a road trip? Having a car gives you all the flexibility you could want, and the capacity to see some of the most amazing sights the British Isles keeps hidden. Here are some of the top drives to go on through Scotland.

Edinburgh to Berwick-upon-Tweed

Driving from Edinburgh to the north of England can be dull if you stick to the main roads. But the coast just north of the border is stunning if you follow its wiggles and turns, trailing through all its little towns. Both Dirleton and Tantallon Castle are along the route and are mostly ruins, but are stunning stopping points, particularly Tantallon which sits right on the coast of the North Sea. Stay in one of our Edinburgh hotels to begin this wonderfully scenic drive.

 Glasgow to Fort William

The A82 is renowned as one of the most beautiful roads to drive on in Scotland. Start by staying in one of our Glasgow hotels, then set off north from there. On the way, you’ll drive right along Loch Lomond, and through Glencoe, which is one of the most historic and romantic areas of the highlands, as well as a great base for outdoor activities should you feel so inclined. Finish up at our Fort William hotel and you will have seen some of the most dramatic scenery the highlands have to offer.

 Aberdeen to Balmoral

If you want a taste of something a bit further north, start your road trip in our Aberdeen Central hotel and then make your way west. You’ll quickly hit the Glenmore Forest Park in the Cairngorms, which is the place to be for outdoor enthusiasts. But if history and beautiful buildings are more your thing, you won’t be disappointed when you reach the stunning Royal Balmoral Estate. You’ll enjoy wandering in the gardens, following the audio guide tour, visiting the exhibitions and finally taking tea in the coffee shop.

 Dundee to Aberdeen

This route, known as the Angus Coastal Route, is full of things to see and do. Start at our Dundee Central hotel, then drive north, stopping at the picturesque seaside towns of Broughty Ferry, Montrose or Stonehaven, relaxing on sandy beaches, and wandering nature reserves. If you’re a golfing enthusiast you’ll find one of the most challenging and dramatic courses at Carnoustie, which is worth a visit just to discover the history of the Links.

 Isle of Skye

The Hebrides really are a world of their own and need to be explored to be understood. With beaches that’ll convince you that you’re in a tropical paradise, postcard-perfect towns and all sorts of interesting wildlife, you’ll keep yourself and your family amused for days. Don’t miss Quiraing, which has the best views on the island, and which is well worth the perilous drive up hairpin bends to get there.
