Have you ever noticed how relaxed and invigorated you feel after a night’s sleep at a Travelodge hotel? Well, it’s not just our great prices that are helping you get the perfect night’s sleep – the carefully selected colour-schemes in our newly refurbished rooms are designed to help you relax and catch some much-needed slumber too.
Following a recent study that we conducted with 2,000 Britons, the colour blue has come out on top when it comes to bedroom colour schemes that will help you get some rest. Britons who sleep in blue rooms reported the best sleep patterns in the study banking an impressive average of seven hours and fifty two minutes of sleep per night.
In order to carry out the study, Travelodge looked through the keyhole of 2,000 British homes, trying to find out which colour scheme was inducing the most restful nights. Blue was the clear winner of the survey, but certain shades of yellow came a close second, inducing an average of 7 hours 45 minutes of sleep, while green came in third at 7 hours 36 minutes.
At the other end of the spectrum, the least slumber-inducing bedroom colours included purple, brown and grey, with people who sleep in a purple environment averaging just 5 hours and 56 minutes of sleep per night.
When Frances Whitley (Travelodge’s In-house Interior Designer) and her team set about designing the newly refurbished hotels, customer comfort was at the top of their minds. Frances says: “I have spent the last 12 months working with our customers to create a purpose built room for them,” she says. “In today’s modern world, Britons want a high level of co-ordination between colours, shades, patters and features. Therefore in our new Travelodge room, we have injected different shades of the colour blue into our room décor. This creates a calm and relaxing environment to help customers attain a good night’s sleep whilst enabling them to feel totally energised upon waking up in the morning.”
According to psychologists, Travelodge’s findings are not surprising. The colour blue is thought to be associated with a feeling of calmness, providing protection against nightmares. The colour also helps to reduce blood pressure and heart rate, both of which can assist with getting a great night’s sleep.
“Your bedroom décor can certainly impact upon your quality and quantity of sleep per night,” says Suzy Chiazzari, Colour Therapy and Holistic Interior Design Consultant. “It’s not surprising that blue came out top in the study of the best colours to promote sleep, as the colour blue is very restful to the eye. Psychologically we relate blue to calm waters and the blue sky, both of which we find very soothing.”
So, next time you decide to do a spot of re-decorating, think carefully about the colours you pick if you want to create a real heaven of relaxation.
