For anyone venturing down here to Devon in the South West, Exeter is a real hidden gem!

And if you’re staying in our Exeter Travelodge off the M5, you’re just 1 mile from Sandy Park for the rugby, and 4 miles from town.

With a harbour, traditional architecture and plenty of places to go out, Exeter boasts some wonderful ways to spend your time.

From eating out to shopping and taking in historical sights, or simply watching the world go by from the peaceful Cathedral Green, Exeter has it all.

1. Where to eat – for all budgets

For the gastronauts among you, Exeter has a rich selection of places to eat.

There’s the wonderful Michael Caines restaurant at Abode on the Cathedral Green. Renowned for its fine dining and a menu that will have you coming back for more.

Slightly off the beaten track, but none the worse for it, is Angela’s Restaurant on Fore Street in the West Quarter of Exeter. With a menu that includes wonderful fresh fish and seafood dishes, the food served here is a culinary delight. But though this place is tucked away, it’s popular. So booking in advance is wise.

For vegans and vegetarians, Herbies of North St is highly recommended and their menu boasts a generous choice in dishes.

While lovers of steaks should definitely visit Harry’s Restaurant on Longbrook St.

Add to these a plethora of chain eateries including Jamie’s Italian, Wagamama, Ask, and Cafe Rouge and you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to dining out.

2. What to see

History buffs will find themselves immersed in the past here.

Take guided walks around the city with knowledgeable ‘Redcoat’ guides or soak in the atmosphere of Exeter Cathedral. Wherever you venture you’ll be mere feet away from the town’s interesting past.

Visitors can also explore the RAMM (Royal Albert Memorial Museum) and discover its collections of Zoology, local art, fine art and Geology.

Should you choose to go a little deeper, however, then you’ll find Exeter’s Underground passages.

These vaulted tunnels run beneath the very streets of Exeter and date from around the 14th century, just make sure you keep your hard hat on!

3. Where to shop

Shopaholics should not feel left out!

If it’s a rainy day, stroll through the Princesshay shopping centre for treats from Debenhams, Fat Face, Build A Bear, Pandora and Hotel Chocolat.

Exeter High Street features firm favourites such as Next, Waterstones and House of Fraser. Plus, of course, the Guildhall shopping centre and Harlequins shopping centre, which are always worth exploring.

But more eclectic shoppers should not miss out on a walk down Fore Street for vintage and retro chic. There’s Blue Banana, McCoys Arcade and a host of other shops, where classic and quirky sit side by side and kitsch is still en vogue.

So if you’re headed to Exeter for the rugby, be sure not to miss out on the variety is has to offer…you’ll soon be planning a return trip!
