We live on an island, but how often do you head to the waterfront?

Whether it’s overlooking the River Thames or enjoying stunning vistas across the Cornish coast, there are plenty of beautiful waterside eateries in the UK.

Here is our guide to five of the best, from the TV chef-famous to the hidden gems:

1. Rick Stein’s, Padstow

Think of waterside dining in the UK and Rick Stein’s is bound to come to mind. Now 40 years old, this internationally acclaimed seafood restaurant is the jewel in the crown of North Cornwall’s foodie culture.

Most of the fish is sourced from the harbour that sits right on the restaurant’s doorstep and each dish is prepared as a work of art. Prices are on the higher end of the spectrum, but this place will earn you gold stars if you want to impress at a special occasion.

2. Nathan Outlaw, Rock

Having trained at Rick Stein’s, Outlaw opened up his own seafood establishment just across the bay, complete with beautiful views of the ocean.

Critics and food-lovers alike were quick to fall for the fresh flavours and high quality dishes. And it wasn’t long before Outlaw became the owner of a Michelin star. Outlaw’s focus is on sustainability and creating delicious creations using fish you probably won’t find on ordinary menus.

3. Blueprint Café, London

London might not have a seaside setting, but this popular restaurant overlooks the Thames, with stunning views of Tower Bridge and the Embankment.

Expect mid-range prices for high-quality food and a brilliant wine list to complement the flavours. Make sure you book ahead as this café gets extremely busy at evenings.

Our Travelodge London Central hotel is just a short walk away along the banks of the river.

4. Dennis Café, Tenby, Wales

A proper English beach café, the Dennis is a friendly local place with great views over the coastline. The food is as down to earth as the atmosphere, and children are free to play on the sandy beach outside as they wait for their food to arrive.

This is a trusted family restaurant, a place to tuck into traditional English fry-ups whilst you watch the waves come in.

5. Boathouse Café, Gigha, Scotland

Adorable and remote, this picturesque little café is found in the heart of the marina in Ardminish Bay. Serving up delicious local produce and fresh-caught fish including local halibut, this restaurant is listed in the Michelin Restaurant Guide.

The local area offers Instagram-friendly rural Scottish countryside and mountains. Visit the island at sunset for clear colours reflected on the serene water.
