Is there anything better than curling up and losing yourself in a good book? Whether it’s on the sofa, sat on the train home or lying on a sandy beach somewhere, a novel or autobiography is the perfect companion.
Thrillers keep us on the edge of our seats, romances gushing at the thought of exotic faraway lands and comedies laughing till we cry. When it comes to really getting to know a book though, there’s no better way than a group discussion and a direct line to the author, which is exactly why literature festivals are so popular. They offer a great way to learn more about the authors you love, find out more about those you’ve never heard of, and discuss your favourite books, new and old, with like-minded individuals.
One such event is the York Literature Festival, where the great and good come together between the 21st-30th March to discuss all things literary.
York itself has a rich and diverse history when it comes to literature, while its cultural significance is also hard to deny. The likes of Kate Atkinson, W. H. Auden and Andrew Martin were born in this historic city, while Charles Dickens, the Bronte Sisters and Wilkie Collins all loved to visit.

Germaine Greer will be speaking about The Disappearing Woman and how females’ roles have changed in today’s society, with the famed feminist drawing on her experience from the forefront of women’s rights since she wrote The Female Eunuch in 1970.
Then there’s a number of workshops on everything from short fiction to poetry to help budding writers of all ages take their first step on the literary ladder.
Alan Johnson, a key figure in the Labour Party and keen political thinker will also be speaking about his book, This Boy: A Memoir of Childhood and how a tough upbringing coloured his morals and subsequent career in Whitehall.
