Hot Trend: Speciality Cafes

There’s a new trend in the café and restaurant scene, the niche café. Offering unique tastes and flavour combinations, this new breed of coffee shop is showcasing unusual and sometimes unexpected flavour combinations. Here are a few of our favourites:

1. Cereal Killer Café, London

The Cereal Killer Café attracted national headline when it opened in 2014. Serving up standard cereals you can get in the supermarket as well as speciality imported brands and even unique cereal blends, the café plays on nostalgia for childhood breakfasts. It’s a popular concept and the queues often stretch down the street. Book a room at our nearby Travelodge Liverpool Street to get an early start.

2. Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium, London

Missing your feline friend or simply hankering for some kitten cuddles? Lady Dinah’s is the first cat café in the UK, offering tea and cakes surrounded by cats, most of whom are available for adoption if you happen to fall in love while you dine.

3. Taps, Manchester

Ok, we’ve snuck in one that’s not a cafe. But it does have novelty value.

For those judges of the ultimate pint, Taps let’s you pull your own at table. They’ve got a good range of Continental beers on tap, plus bottles from behind the bar if you’re not too confident of your pull-your-own skills. Veggies will be pleased that the grub list has meat-free meals too. You’ll find this popular spot just off Deansgate in the Great Northern Tower, about 11 minutes’ walk from our central hotel.

4. Porridge Café, Pop Up

Making a meal out of the humble bowl of oats, the Porridge Café popped up in London at the start of the year and rumour has it that they are about to announce their second residency. The pop-up owners promise to make the well known dish into a taste sensation. Keep your eyes peeled for the next installment.

5. The Marwood Café, Brighton

Keeping it simple, this well loved Brighton coffee shop focuses on something altogether more expected: great coffee. But they’re giving the speciality cafés a run for their money with their quirky mix of eclectic décor (old Mac hard drives with cushions on top serve as stools), board games and exceptional coffee blends. This is a place to relax and kick back. Continue the restful routine by booking a room at our nearby Travelodge Brighton Hotel.
