The best places to see autumn colours

Don’t stress over the end of the summer – celebrate the arrival of autumn by planning a short break away in the UK.

With the seasons changing and nature transforming, the colours are always spectacular, check out our best picks to seeing the autumn in all its glory.

For the photographer: The New Forest
This National Park in the south of England includes 146km² of broadleaved woodland, which translates to a mightily impressive autumn show. But there is also more than just the trees to look at – the area is famous for its wildlife, including New Forest ponies, roaming pigs and cattle and lots of deer. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a photographer, this is definitely the place to take the long lens and snap a shot of a creature posed perfectly in front of gold and orange leaves. Stay in our Stoney Cross Lyndhurst hotel to be in prime position for lots of nature walks.

For the environmentally conscious: The National Forest
You’ll find another famous forest further north, around Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire, where the National Forest Company has been cultivating over 200 square miles into rich woodland. After two decades of the project, the forest is finally starting to take shape, so now is a great time to go and see what work has been done. Book a room in our Burton Upon Trent Central hotel to be a short drive from the visitor centre at Conkers, where you can learn all about the reforestation that’s been taking place.

For the family: Sherwood Forest
What better way to entice the kids to enjoy nature than to combine a trip to the woods with stories of the greatest hero and his adventures? Robin Hood legends are told everywhere in the forest, and you’ll find plenty of activities to keep everyone happy, particularly at the Sherwood Forest Art and Craft Centre. Stay in our Retford Markham Moor hotel to be just 7 miles from the forest.

For the walker: Usk Valley
Wales is full of great walking territory, but the Usk Valley Way is one of the best autumn hikes there is. The 48-mile path through the woods takes a few days to complete, but even just doing a section of it is well worth it. Our Newport Central hotel is close to the start of the walk at Caerleon, where you can follow the walk all the way to Brecon.

For the historian: Big Tree Country
Perthshire in Scotland is home to some of the most historic trees in the UK. With the oldest tree in Europe, to the world’s highest hedge, to the UK’s widest conifer, there are plenty of natural attractions to see.  You’ll also find the sole surviving tree from Shakespeare’s Birnam Wood on the banks of the River Tay. Book your room in our Perth Central or Perth Broxden Junction hotel for the chance to discover all the stories of the area.
