Money-saving travel tips

Most of us are feeling the pinch right now, so we’ve put together some helpful tips on saving where you can this summer.

A staycation can be more affordable than you think and just as exciting as going abroad. Read on for our top tips on saving money for your next trip away.

Take a staycation

Flying abroad can be stressful – especially if you’re a family. Passports, queues, covid-restrictions, flight cancellations and strikes – yikes! Whilst our airport hotels can make it easier to travel overseas, you could consider a staycation instead. Don’t want to leave your pets at home? No problem! All of our hotels have pet-friendly rooms. Pack up your car (no need to worry about baggage restrictions!) and discover why Britain is great!

Be flexible

It’s often more convenient to get away at the weekends, but you can save yourself quite a bit by being flexible on days and considering a weekday break instead. Sunday night stays are often the cheapest at Travelodge, and you can save time in traffic by avoiding the weekend rush! With our Best Price Finder tool, you can easily find our most affordable prices for the place you want to stay. Or, if you don’t have a specific location, you can effortlessly search 1000s of dates and destinations across the UK to find your perfect getaway.

Go off-season

Some of the best hotel deals in popular seaside towns can be snapped up in the summer months. If you prefer quieter surroundings, you can avoid the hustle and bustle and instead enjoy the peaceful solitude of the beach in the off-season. If you have a dog, this is also the perfect time to bring them along, as they are often allowed on beaches in Autumn and Winter, as opposed to the summer months. And what better way to blow off the cobwebs than a brisk walk on the beach, eh?

Broaden your horizon

Discover Britain’s secret gems by choosing lesser-known destinations. Cities such as Bath and York have international appeal, but other fantastic destinations in the UK provide an equally exciting weekend away. Why not take a trip to the new city of culture, Bradford? Or the charming, quaint city of St Albans? With over 580 hotels to choose from, you’re sure to find a low-cost break to suit you. Find low-cost or free parking

Parking is often an issue when travelling somewhere new, but here at Travelodge, we try to take the stress out of finding a space by including up-to-date parking information on all our hotel booking pages. Many of our hotels offer free on-site parking , or if this is unavailable, we suggest nearby car parks and provide their current pricing. If you want to save money, we also advise researching beforehand. For example, when travelling to Brighton and London, it’s often more cost-effective to travel via public transport than in a car.

Stay out of town

It is worth considering staying on the outskirts of a town or city, as an alternative to the centre. Hotels popular with our business customers during the week are often quieter at weekends, meaning you get to stay on the outskirts of Britain’s most popular cities for less, with great parking options. You can still access all the amenities with regular public transport on offer around most towns and cities. Also, you might find your stay more peaceful away from the hustle and bustle!

Food

Unlimited Breakfast starts from only £8.99, and kids eat free, providing you with plenty of fuel for your day ahead.

Find free activities

Taking a trip doesn’t mean spending a lot on activities. There are plenty of free and low-cost things to do up and down the country. If it rains, head inside to a museum that often has free entry, or if it shines, why not enjoy a local park or woods. There are lots of articles on free and low-cost things to do across Britain on our blog.

Keep an eye out for special offers

If you want access to our best prices, subscribe to our emails for updates on special offers for hotel deals. Restaurants and attractions often have discounts when booking in advance or signing up for marketing, so it’s worth checking out what’s available before you travel. And if you want to be really savvy, look at ‘voucher code’ websites for money off your bill.

Get lucky with a competition

One of the best ways to save money is not to spend any money at all! At Travelodge, we give away thousands of pounds worth of free stays every year, to our email subscribers (sign up here) and our social channels (check out our Facebook and Instagram). All summer we’re giving away a free stay exclusively to our email subscribers when they book direct. Find out more here.
