The Best Seafood in Britain

Have you got a favourite place for great seafood in Britain? We know some destinations really hit the spot when it comes to finding the freshest and tastiest fish. Here’s our pick of the places to go for a seaside break with amazing food:

1. Whitstable, Kent

Travel to our Whitstable Travelodge and relax in this beautiful coastal town, famous for its oysters. Whitstable fish market is a great place to sample the freshest seafood, whether it be a cup of smoked cockles, barbecued fish or newly caught crab. The market’s supplied by 14 local fishing boats, and you should definitely watch the fishermen unload their catches from the harbour next door. If a sit-down meal takes your fancy, visit Wheelers Oyster Bar, the oldest restaurant in the town. The intimate eatery serves a small but ever changing menu, with dishes such as Kentish lobster lasagne, smoked eels and, of course, the Whitstable oyster. Founded in 1856, and with a local flare all its own, Wheelers is not to be missed.

2. Whitby, Yorkshire

Visit the Whitby seaside and enjoy some of the best fish and chips in Britain at this beautiful Yorkshire destination. It’s famed as the place where the original Count Dracula arrived in Britain, but Whitby’s far from gloomy. Stay at our nearby Travelodge and get to love the town’s activities, including fossil hunting, brisk walks along the beach and bargain hunting in Whitby’s great little shops. After working up an appetite from breathing in the sea air, treat yourself to some fish and chips from The Magpie Cafe. Choose from over 20 different fish and a more batters than you’d think could exist, including gluten-free. Eat in or dine out on the beach; whatever you choose, it will be a meal to remember.

3. Port Isaac, Cornwall

Visit our Wadebridge Travelodge to be close to the cliffside fishing village of Port Isaac and Nathan Outlaw’s relocated seafood restaurant, Outlaw’s. Complete with breathtaking panoramic views, highlights on the menu include cured brill with fennel and horseradish, and monkish with smoked leeks, Jerusalem artichoke and seaweed. For a meal with a bistro feel, visit Nathan Outlaw’s second restaurant in the small town. The Fish Kitchen dishes up a selection of small plates in a converted fisherman’s cottage, for a less costly meal that’ll still leave you happy as a clam.

4. London

London may not be the obvious destination for seafood lovers, but fast transport means it’s easy to find top-quality fish dishes in the capital. Stay in one of our London Travelodges and enjoy exquisite dishes from the likes of J.Sheekey in St Martins Court, a 120 year old restaurant serving the finest oysters, caviar and fresh fish dishes. For something more casual-trendy, head to the award-winning Wright Brothers Oyster House in Soho or Fish!Kitchen in Borough Market. Fish! is ideal for social media fans: a delicious meal in the heart of the bustling food and flower market. Get your choice of fish cooked your way or pick a classic dish such as the Fish!Pie. It may not be beside the sea, but it’s right next to the Thames!
