Previous winners include Tracy Emin, Damien Hirst and Anthony Gormley. Normally held in England, the 2013 exhibition and event is being held in Ireland! Derry in Londonderry is the City of Culture 2013 and with plenty going on as well as The Turner Prize, taking a break and heading to our Travelodge in Derry will mean you can get a great art fix!

The 2013 Turner Prize nominees are Laura Prouvost, Tino Sehgal, David Shrigley and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. The exhibition is open for the public from 23 October 2013 – 5 January 2014 whilst a panel of judges decide the winner.

Laura Prouvost

Laura Prouvost is a young artist who makes films and installations based around storytelling and surrealism. Her work “Wantee” is fun, enchanting but slightly sad. Entering her space you will be sucked in to the world of a fictional grandfather and welcomed in to his cabin full of old artists junk. Her work is an intimate and cosy journey telling a story about the unknown artists of the past.

Tino Sehgal

Tino Sehgal makes art works centred around live encounters with people. His work at Derry questions traditional forms of art and will mean that the audience are able to get involved. “The Exchange” is a great chance to participate in the art work yourself and you will even be paid £2 if you choose to take part in the conversation and answer a series of questions asked to you by performers!

David Shrigley

David Shrigley is a well known, fun artist who traditionally makes cute and witty drawings about every day situations. His Turner Prize nomination comes from his recent solo exhibition at The Hayward Gallery. David Shrigley is also one of the contenders for The Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square with his giant thumbs up known as “Really Good”! His Turner Prize piece is funny and strange. The audience walks in to a room set up for a life drawing class complete with easels, paper and materials. In the centre is a statue of a hilarious naked man, who believe it or not, periodically pees in to a bucket! The public are then invited to sit down and draw. Give it a go if you dare!

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is a painter, poet and writer who makes large paintings of fictional subjects that she creates from her memory. Yiadom-Boakye paints black subjects, challenging traditional western painting and the result is beautiful and fascinating.Shown in a darkened room her paintings are lit and become like characters in her own novel or film as they stand out from the wall.

This year’s Turner Prize nominations are all about stepping in to the artists world and viewing the art works in some kind of interactive way. Making a trip to Derry will mean you can experience the art works for what they are and make a choice about who you think should be this years winner!

The Turner Prize is the best known art prize in Britain.
