It\u2019s England\u2019s most beautiful National Park, so come and discover why.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018auld grey town\u2019 of Kendal is the gateway to the South Lakes. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breweryarts.co.uk\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Brewery Arts Centre<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> has lots of live performances, a popular bar and an excellent restaurant. Abbot Hall Art Gallery has a wide collection of contemporary and traditional art and the Museum of Lakeland Life has intriguing exhibits on local history and crafts. There\u2019s a handy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelodge.co.uk\/hotels\/330\/Kendal-hotel\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Travelodge<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> on the outskirts of town, en route to Windermere and the heart of the lakes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3328 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/travelodgeblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/iStock_windermere.jpg\" alt=\"Windermere and Langdale Pikes\" width=\"847\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelodgeblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/iStock_windermere.jpg 847w, https:\/\/travelodgeblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/iStock_windermere-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 847px) 100vw, 847px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bustling Bowness-on-Windermere is the Lake District\u2019s \u2018hotspot\u2019. Take a ferry around England\u2019s longest lake and stop off at the end for the Aquarium of the Lakes and steam train to Haverthwaite. Try the local ice cream and get a bag of duck food to feed the ever-hungry swans. See if you can find the \u2018Hole in the Wall\u2019 pub in the back lanes.<br \/>\nAmbleside is a walker\u2019s heaven \u2013 every other shop sells hiking equipment and all-weather gear. There\u2019s an excellent little cinema called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeffirellis.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Zeffirelli\u2019s<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> if it rains; they have jazz nights and an award-winning Pizzeria. The nearby chip shop\u2019s pretty good too. You can go up \u2018The Struggle\u2019 to Kirkstone Inn and from there into enchanting Patterdale to see Ullswater and Aira Force.<\/p>\n<p>The Langdale Valley has soaring fells that tower over you and tiny hamlets sheltering in their shadow. Stop off at mountaineer\u2019s pub the \u2018Old Dungeon Ghyll\u2019 for slate floors, basic food and excellent beer.<\/p>\n<p>Coniston Water is where Donald Campbell flipped Bluebird whilst trying to break the water speed record. He\u2019s buried in the local churchyard. Sail on Victorian steamboat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/gondola\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">\u2018Gondola\u2019 <span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a>and visit Brantwood, John Ruskin\u2019s home. A hearty hike up the Old Man of Coniston works up an appetite for a hearty meal in the Bull Inn. If you prefer walking on the flat, nearby Tarn Hows has a path suitable for prams and wheelchairs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3327 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/travelodgeblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/iStock_grasmere.jpg\" alt=\"iStock_grasmere\" width=\"866\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelodgeblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/iStock_grasmere.jpg 866w, https:\/\/travelodgeblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/iStock_grasmere-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Stop off in picturesque Grasmere. Wordsworth\u2019s Dove Cottage is a popular tourist destination. Treat yourself to delicious Grasmere Gingerbread from the old-fashioned shop by the church and grab a cuppa at charming Baldry\u2019s Tea Shop; if you\u2019re lucky they\u2019ll have some scrumptious lemon meringue pie left.<\/p>\n<p>To escape the crowds head for the Western Lakes. Stay at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelodge.co.uk\/hotels\/263\/Barrow-In-Furness-hotel\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Travelodge in Barrow<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> and find out about its maritime history at the free Dock Museum. Up the coast is the Ravenglass and Eskdale steam train that goes up to Dalegarth station not far from Scafell Pike, England\u2019s highest mountain. Through pretty Duddon Valley you cross barren hill tops to eerily haunting Wast Water.<\/p>\n<p>For the North Lakes base yourself at our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelodge.co.uk\/hotels\/350\/Cockermouth-hotel\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Travelodge Cockermouth<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> with its colourful Georgian houses and contemporary arts scene. If you\u2019re lucky you might see ospreys fishing in Bassenthwaite Lake. Elegant Keswick has a good shopping centre and a quirky<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pencilmuseum.co.uk\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\"> Pencil Museum<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a>. Friar\u2019s of Keswick on the main street sells scrumptious chocolates and has a busy tea shop. The ancient Moot Hall is now the Tourist Information Centre. The Theatre by the Lake is next to tranquil Derwentwater and an easy walk takes you to a splendid viewpoint at Friar\u2019s Crag.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking to get really active on your next visit to the Lakes, there is a perfect fell running scene in Cumbria. You can get all the latest running events to plan into your trip via <a href=\"https:\/\/runabc.co.uk\/cumbria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">runABC Cumbria<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Head up through Borrowdale and stop off at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honister-slate-mine.co.uk\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Honister Slate Mine<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> for a tour of the old mining tunnels or try the Via Ferrata for a walk on the wild side. Have a picnic on the shores of Buttermere or lunch at the Bridge Hotel. G off the beaten track and explore attractive Newlands Valley \u2013 quintessential Lakeland scenery.
