It\u2019s often overlooked in favour of its better\u2011known neighbours, but Leicester is bursting with culture, history and foodie hotspots. It\u2019s one of England\u2019s oldest cities, established by the Romans all the way back in 47 AD (the same time as London!).<\/h4>\n

1. Explore Leicester\u2019s Old Town<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"Start your day with a trip to Leicester Cathedral<\/span><\/a>, which has watched over the city for more than 900 years. Here, you can explore Richard III\u2019s modern tomb – the king\u2019s remains were buried here again in 2015, after being discovered under a nearby car park! Marvel at the beautiful stained-glass windows and enjoy a peaceful stroll through the cathedral\u2019s lawns and gardens.<\/h4>\n

Continue your journey through royal and religious history by heading over to St Mary de Castro Church<\/span><\/a>, where both Henry VI and Richard, Duke of York, were knighted. Architecture enthusiasts will love the Norman doorways, 13th\u2011century font and intricate carvings.<\/h4>\n

Next up is the timber\u2011framed Guildhall<\/span><\/a> – Leicester\u2019s oldest civic building. The Great Hall was built in 1390 and by 1563 it had become the city\u2019s first town hall. Over the centuries, it has hosted great feasts, dramatic performances (local lore claims Shakespeare himself acted here!) and even Leicester\u2019s first public library.<\/h4>\n

2. Uncover the city\u2019s Medieval past<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"KingYou\u2019ve already explored his tomb at the cathedral, but now it\u2019s time to learn the dramatic story of the monarch\u2019s life at the King Richard III Discovery Centre<\/span><\/a>. Interactive displays let you play detective and explore the controversy surrounding the king\u2019s reputation. Through a glass floor, you can even gaze down into the car park grave where his remains were found in 2012!<\/h4>\n
