While Jack Frost is nipping there are plenty of out-of-the-ordinary romantic weekends you can have right here in the UK. Here are five of our favourites:

1. Winter walk: Holkham Beach, Norfolk

Holkham sand dunes

Grab a big scarf and a woolly hat and head to the coast for a hearty walk along the shores of Holkham Beach in Norfolk. It’s one of the UK’s largest beaches and it’s part of a beautiful and relatively unspoilt nature reserve. The waters get quite rough in winter, which gives it a beautiful, ominous quality and the sands are full of migrant birds including larks, finches and geese. After a day of relaxed coastal roaming, head to our nearby Kings Lynn Travelodge to warm up and wind down.

2. Cosy pubs: Edinburgh

The Gothic streets of Edinburgh are beautiful in the winter months. And after a day having the run of the city and its magnificent castle, there are plenty of cosy pubs with roaring fires to spend a cosy evening in. Snuggle under the dimly lit wooden beams of the Last Drop in the Grassmarket or walk for half an hour across Arthur’s Seat to the surprisingly quaint village of Duddingston. It’s home to the Sheep Heid Inn, rumoured to be one of Scotland’s oldest pubs, where you’ll find a 19th-century skittles alley. Stay at one of our Edinburgh hotels for a short walk home.

3. Ski break: Milton Keynes

Outdoor skiing in the UK can be a bit unpredictable, but there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the snow. Hit the slopes and practice your skills at the indoor Milton Keynes Snozone. Take a lesson or head to the family fun zone for some sledging and ice slide sessions. Book a room at our Milton Keynes Travelodge and you won’t have far to go to rest your tired legs.

4. Extreme outdoors: Cardiff

Forget white water rafting, winter in Wales is all about white water hot dogging. That’s rushing through the rapids in a double inflatable kayak that lets you sit deeper in the water. There are several places that offer hot dogging during the winter months. One of the most popular is the Cardiff International White Water Centre, which is specially built and designed for on-demand activities, whatever the weather. Stay at our Cardiff Central Queen Street Travelodge.

5. Thermal spa: Bath

Enjoy the total relaxation of a heated rooftop mineral pool at Britain’s original thermal spa. Sitting at the heart of the city, the spa combines the old natural spa with new treatment rooms and amenities for total pampering. Bath is also a fantastic city if you love your traditional afternoon tea: just step back in time at Bea’s Vintage Tea Rooms.
