Photo \u00a9 imbeingerica<\/p><\/div><p>So, you&#8217;ve found yourself in London for that all-important match, and you have some time to kill on either side of your trip to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelodge.co.uk\/uk\/attractions\/hotels-near-wembley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Wembley<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Well, you may as well make the most of your stay and take to the capital&#8217;s streets with a view to explore all its hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<p>With only a few days in the city, it&#8217;s only right that you avoid those standard tourist traps and spend as much time as you can visiting the top-quality (and less crowded!) markets, bars and hot spots.<\/p>\n<p>So that you can say you spent your staycation like a real Londoner would.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested in doing just that, then read on, sports fans&#8230;<\/p><p><strong>1. Photo \u00a9 imbeingerica<\/p><\/div><p>You\u00a0<strong><em>do<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0want to be able to brag to all your friends back home that you were able to sample some of the trendiest food in the world while in London, right?<\/p>\n<p>Plus, a lot of the food markets \u00a0(like <a href=\"http:\/\/boroughmarket.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Borough Market<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> in Southwark, <a href=\"http:\/\/brixtonmarket.net\/brixton-village\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Market Row<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> and The Village in Brixton, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenwichmarketlondon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Greenwich Market<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> in&#8230; Greenwich) have taste-testers and samples a-plenty.<\/p>\n<p>This means you can basically wander the stalls and spend your time feasting on the freebie samples until your belly can take no more. Plus there&#8217;s a bar.<\/p>\n<p>But if heights aren&#8217;t your thing though, make the outer boroughs of the city your friend for the afternoon. From Greenwich&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rmg.co.uk\/royal-observatory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Royal Observatory<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> you have excellent views of the Isle of Dogs and out to the City of London. Book into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelodge.co.uk\/uk\/attractions\/hotels-near-02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">hotel near the O2<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a> for a Greenwich location close to transport links and the Olympic Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>From Blythe Hill Fields in Brockley, near Greenwich, you&#8217;ll have a panorama of both the City and the Wharf.<\/p>\n<p>Staying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelodge.co.uk\/uk\/attractions\/hotels-near-twickenham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">near Twickenham<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a>? From Richmond Park in the west, you&#8217;ll have some of the most exceptional views of the whole of London.<\/p>\n<p>And deer.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll definitely also get to see some deer. Take a picnic and make a day of it. There&#8217;s definitely bragging rights in picnicking with deer, I&#8217;m sure of it.<\/p><p><strong>3. Big nights and bottomless brunches<\/strong><\/p><p>It doesn&#8217;t matter if you&#8217;re planning a lads&#8217; night out, a big night on the tiles, or hoping to sample of London&#8217;s finest &#8216;bottomless brunches&#8217;, because there&#8217;s a place to drink in London for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>From &#8216;old man pubs&#8217; to kitschy pop-up bars and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicalbingo.co.uk\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">hilarious bingo nights<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a>, there&#8217;s genuinely a night out in this town for every man and his dog (some genuinely come with their own dogs!).<\/p><div id=\"attachment_5381\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5381\" class=\"wp-image-5381\" src=\"https:\/\/travelodgeblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/brunch-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"London brunch\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelodgeblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/brunch-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/travelodgeblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/brunch-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/travelodgeblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/brunch.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Big brunch. If trendy cocktails in jam jars are more your speed, head east to Shoreditch and Hoxton.<\/p>\n<p>Just after a cold beer in a pub with a king&#8217;s name and a decent jukebox? Try Camden in North London.<\/p>\n<p>Want to watch the sports? Clapham in West London is your best bet.<\/p>\n<p>And, with the recent introduction of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/restaurants\/the-best-bottomless-brunches-in-london\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">boozy brunches<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a>\u00a0to London, a happy afternoon\u00a0has never been more acceptable &#8211; and affordable.<\/p>\n<p>If drinking before five isn&#8217;t your cuppa tea, then just ask for a cuppa tea, an equally acceptable bevvy to be drinking alongside your sweet potato pancakes or vegan full English, or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cerealkillercafe.co.uk\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">bowl of cereal<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a>, \u00a0if that&#8217;s more your speed. When in Rome&#8230;<\/p><p><strong>4. Shopping (or not)<\/strong><\/p><p>Don&#8217;t do it. I do not recommend it.<\/p>\n<p>Shopping in London should be avoided at all costs.<\/p>\n<p>But, if this isn&#8217;t a possibility, simply try avoiding the major shopping centres around the city, including Oxford Street. Photo \u00a9 imbeingerica<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Portobello Road in the west and Spitalfields and Petticoat Lane Markets in the east regularly host some of the country&#8217;s top designers and creators of not only clothing, but hair accessories and scarves, unusual sculptures and artwork, and much more.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re after something uncommon that\u00a0you won&#8217;t find back home, then these markets are where you&#8217;ll want to spend your time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Tours<\/strong><\/p><p>If shopping&#8217;s not your speed and you want to get as much as you can from the city, then I would definitely suggest getting involved in some of the city&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bestldnwalks.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">quirky walking tours<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From walks around the Royal Parks to Sherlock Holmes tours and Pirate Pub Crawls around the docks, there are some hilarious and ridiculous walking tours to participate in.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ll absolutely take you off the beaten tourist track, and have you leaving London with a richer knowledge of our fair capital&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s a pretty good start, don&#8217;t you think?<\/p>\n<p>There are, of course, the more obvious of ways to spend your time in the city that you\u00a0<strong><em>must do<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0if you&#8217;ve not done them before.<\/p>\n<p>Get on a London Duck Bus or Thames Cruise of some sort, head to Kew Gardens for an afternoon stroll, hire a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.santander-products.co.uk\/cycles\/#\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" class=\"wpel-icon-right\">Santander Cycle<span class=\"wpel-icon wpel-image wpel-icon-6\"><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and follow the bike paths around the Royal Parks, hop on-and-off a city tour bus, eat afternoon tea in a posh hotel, go to the theatre, go see if the Queen is at home, do all of the Harry Potter things, all the museums, see the dinosaurs, etc, etc, etc.<\/p>\n<p>But really, if you&#8217;ve only got a couple of days, then, do try and make the most of it!
