On a budget during your family break in Leeds? No problem. The city is packed with great-value things to do, from riding a steam train to tracking owls…<\/p>

1. Admire Art at The Tetley
\n<\/strong>The iconic Tetley Brewery dating back to the 1930s is now dedicated to contemporary art and culture. Don\u2019t miss the family workshops, den building and festivals. Check Tetley\u2019s<\/span><\/a> website for the open days too.<\/p>

2. Take in the fresh air at <\/strong>Roundhay Park<\/strong><\/p>\n

With over 700 acres of park and woodland to wander around, the kids can stretch their legs. Don\u2019t miss the lake at its heart, the caf\u00e9 for scones and the old-fashioned sweet shop.<\/p>\n

3. Day out at the museum
\n<\/strong>Whether you\u2019re interested in all things Egyptian or the Roman era, Iron Age tools or Ancient Greece, the Leeds City Museum<\/span><\/a> in Millennium Square<\/em> is packed with ancient artefacts \u2013 even mummies!<\/p>

4. Indoor play parks<\/strong><\/p>\n

If the weather isn\u2019t up to much, the kids will love an indoor play park to run wild in total safety. Try Munchkins (\u00a33.50), Cottonbudz (\u00a33.75) or Jungle Kids<\/span><\/a> (\u00a35) for great slides and climbing frames.<\/p>

5. Story time at the library<\/strong><\/p>\n

On a rainy day, hole up at the Central Library<\/span><\/a> on Calverley Street. It\u2019s free and a real treasure trove of books, set in a beautiful Grade II-listed building dating back to 1884. Families will find computers to use, free WiFi, and the Leeds tapestry.<\/p>

6. Al fresco chess
\n<\/strong>Take a stroll down to Victoria Gardens<\/span><\/a>, home to the city\u2019s Municipal War Memorial, Ian Jubb\u2019s Angel of Peace, but also to two giant chess boards where you can \u2018play\u2019 a life-size game!<\/p>\n

7. <\/em>Meanwood Valley Trail
\n<\/em><\/strong>Get your walking shoes and amble along the 7-mile trail from Woodhouse Moor to Meanwood Park, the Seven Arches Aqueduct, and Golden Acre Park. Don\u2019t miss Meanwood Valley Urban Farm<\/span><\/a> (\u00a32 adults, 50p children) to meet some friendly creatures.<\/p>

8. Go owl spotting
\n<\/strong>With owls on its coat of arms, the city even has an Owl Trail<\/span><\/a> to follow. Find the 25 birds hidden everywhere from Leeds Minster to the Leeds Tapestry.<\/p>

9. Take a steam train ride
\n<\/strong>Middleton Railway<\/span><\/a> is the world\u2019s oldest working railway, in operation since 1758. Hop on board at Moor Road station for a steam train ride to Middleton Park.\u00a0\u00a0Grab a souvenir or take a tour of the free museum in the Engine House. 10. Meet <\/strong>Lotherton Hall\u2019s rare birds
\n<\/strong>Lotherton Hall<\/span><\/a> is a great place to spend an afternoon. Inside, browse the Fashion Galleries or visit the North wing\u2019s Servants\u2019 Rooms. Outdoors, explore the Edwardian gardens, the orchard or meet the red deer and 480-odd endangered birds. (Adults \u00a35.50, children \u00a32.70)<\/p>\n
