As Head of People Development you’ll be accountable for setting the strategic direction of colleague development.  It will help shape and support the people strategy to achieve business goals and make Travelodge a great place to work where people can build a career.

The key to success in this role is to ensure that enough colleagues, in the right locations, are provided with the opportunity and development to progress into their next role ensuring our succession pipeline is sufficient to support our hotel growth plan.

You’ll achieve this by working closely with the operations directors to create appropriate schemes and modules aligned to our business model and plans. The role will lead and manage a small team around design, procurement and delivery of development opportunities, filling our succession pipeline from Asst Hotel Manager to Regional Director.


What you’ll be doing:


Strategic planning


  • Build short, medium and long-term development plans and initiatives, to create a consistent journey of capability growth and progress which align to the overall business strategy


People development

  • Lead and manage the People Development  team helping to create a culture of delivery and effective output, able to demonstrate the business benefit it was designed to improve or deliver.


Planning and delivery of People Development plans


  • Ensure TNA activities are conducted to meet  business needs and deliver appropriate solutions.  


  • Lead the People Development team to design, deliver and procure development programmes according to the people plan


  • Ensure the continued success of our ASPIRE programme and support the business to ensure a strong pipeline for succession planning into Assistant Hotel Manager roles.


  • Assess requirements and develop a plan to enable the business to have a strong pool of talent to be able to move from Asst hotel Manager into Hotel Manager roles, particularly in our key London and South East locations


  • Support and identify the needs of our managers and leaders to create a range of interventions designed to build progressive capability aligned to our business needs.


  • Work with Operations and People Business Partners to make valuable use of PDPs and create  succession plans that are relevant, appropriate and cost effective.


Relationship building and management


  • Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders across the Travelodge business to support,  analyse, diagnose and recommend development appropriate and cost effective solutions.


  • Work closely with the Training Manager to identify and then build on identified competence levels through appropriate development solutions ensuring learning is a progressive journey


  • Develop relationships with external suppliers to ensure appropriate external resources are sourced when applicable that build on existing development programme foundations.


Measure success

  • Provide ongoing evaluation and ROI of all development solutions Providing tangible benefits and outcomes of all initiatives in support of business objectives


What we’ll expect from you


The successful candidate will have experience of working in a senior Training & Development role managing teams and shaping the strategic direction of Development plans. You’ll have proven experience of design and delivery of employee development programmes in a fast-paced customer focussed environment. A strong commercial focus, being able to demonstrate ROI for all activity is key to success in this role. As well as this, we’re looking for:

  • Demonstrable experience of design and delivery of employee development programmes in a fast-paced customer focussed environment

  • Experience of working in a senior Learning & Development role managing teams and shaping the strategic direction of development plans.

  • Able to use coaching to ensure effectiveness of own team

  • A strong commercial focus, being able to demonstrate ROI for all activity

  • Proven experience  and understanding of the challenges of working in a multisite, operational business

  • Credibility at a senior level and the ability to engage and influence senior stakeholders enthusiastically

  • Strong project and change management experience

  • Excellent people management skills, including evidence and experience of coaching and performance management of direct reports

  • Experience of supplier and budget management

  • Experience of talent & succession strategy

  • Able to communicate and adapt style to people on all levels within the organisation

  • A great coach

  • Able to assimilate and interpret data in order to inform decisions and take key actions

  • Able to read and understand P&Ls, dashboards, and company scorecards

  • Highly resilient and adaptable to change

  • A hands-on approach

  • Can influence and add value at a senior level
