As Head of People Services you’ll be a member of the senior people leadership team, contributing to the people strategy and the key contact for critical incidents and escalations affecting people at Travelodge. 

This role is responsible for managing the service delivery and continuous improvement of the people services teams including employee relations, core people services/administration and people insight, reporting and solutions. 

The role owns people policy, risks and the equality, diversity and inclusion agenda. 

What you’ll be doing:

People Policy 

  • Owns the governance, cyclical review and developments in people policy and guidelines. 

  • Responsible for reviewing and staying up to date with legislative and business change and how these are represented and communicated in the business. 

  • Advises stakeholders on the appropriate structure, tone of voice and people impacting points for other policy frameworks. 

Employee Relations and Litigation

  • Responsible for the ER strategy and leading the ER Manager to manage litigation and dispute resolution in conjunction with a legal partner. 

  • Ensures a framework for continuously improving the ER case management service to the business and developing the team's specialist knowledge. 

  • Accessible as the senior people escalation contact amongst other senior stakeholders to input ER/people response in critical situations.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

  • Leading the ED&I agenda, engaging stakeholders and managing the overarching governance. 

  • Proactively keeping up to date with the latest ED&I insight and sociopolitical trends to consider actions and education at Travelodge. 

  • Owning ED&I training across the business and ensuring compliance to standards set. 

Risk and Compliance 

  • Works closely with the risk and compliance team and people management team to manage and assess our people risks using the company’s risk management framework. 

  • Owns the people compliance measures, ensuring training content and policy is relevant and pragmatic for Travelodge. 

  • Proactively staying up to date with external developments in all people risks subject areas including building knowledge of government department presence and actions in the industry. 

  • Informing and influencing actions that will manage or reduce the impact of our people risks. 

  • Acts as the data owner (GDPR) for the people team and manages the advisory/admin resource to manage privacy impact assessments and actions to maintain compliance with the GDPR. 

  • Responsible for the governance, standards and communication of expectations when employees use people data and information, including people system access levels and therefore sensitive people information.

People Insight


  • Providing a people analytics function that enables stakeholders to access and use people data to inform thinking and business decisions and analyse measures of success. 

  • Leading the people insight and solutions analyst to provide accessible analytics tools and continuously develop insight and solutions for the people strategy. 

Core People Services and Employee Lifecycle 

  • Ownership of the core people services function and leading the people services manager to manage and develop a team to deliver credible and efficient services, cyclical activity and employee life cycle processes to the business. 

  • Facilitating continuous improvement and quality assurance frameworks to ensure processes and services are compliant and relevant as the business evolves. 

  • Manages the version control and retention of people documentation, including standard templates, guidelines and policy updates. Authorises people documentation and communication before publishing. 

Project Management and Support 

  • Individually supports or oversees own team to project manage or provide regular contribution to initiatives such as employee forums and company strategic initiatives. 

What we’ll expect from you

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in a fast paced central HR or shared services environment and managing service delivery teams. Ideally, you’ll have experience  and understanding of the challenges of working in a multisite, low-cost, operational business. You’ll possess strong leadership skills, this role will require someone who can manage a broad range of activities. Experience in a generalist HR management role will, therefore, be advantageous, however equally being resourceful, flexible and analytical will be important. As well as this we’re looking for: 

  • Experience in managing employment litigation and ER strategy

  • Excellent planning and prioritisation

  • Strong, up to date Employment law knowledge

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Proven experience of developing others 

  • Strong decision making skills

  • Experience of performance management

  • The ability to build rapport and strong stakeholder management skills

  • Educated to degree level preferable
