The job in a nutshell

  • To ensure that Travelodge conducts its operations in a safe and effective manner, within the framework of company policies, legislative requirements and any other relevant standards to which the business subscribes.

  • To promote a positive risk management culture within Travelodge and the ownership of risk by teams in all areas of the business operation through providing information and support on an advisory basis.

  • To support the Head of Health and Safety with external bodies where required, and internal stakeholders at Travelodge.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Manage and direct the activities of the Health & Safety Advisors

  • Developing and ensuring the effective delivery of training and development programmes to meet company safety and security policy requirements.

  • Monitoring of the safety and security performance of the company and providing monthly reports to the Head of Health & Safety.

  • Ensuring the effective delivery of the safety and security audit programme and monitoring that appropriate corrective action is taken on any identified non-compliance.

  • Ensuring that no new or newly acquired hotel opens without the appropriate advice and support, including the full and satisfactory safety inspection, and raising any areas / hotels of concern to the Head of Health and Safety.

  • Ensure that suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out in relation to all Travelodge work activities, and that the required control measures are monitored.

  • Ensure that all premises are subject to fire risk assessment and that the required control measures are monitored.

  • Ensure that any incident, unsafe act, condition or situation which in your judgement could compromise the business is immediately escalated to the relevant Line Manager.

  • Monitor legal and other requirements to ensure that company health & safety policy and management systems are fully up to date.

  • Liaise with the Hotel Operations when implementing new policies and procedures to ensure that they are rolled out effectively.

  • Maintain the online health & safety management and reporting systems. 

  • Coordinate the activities of outsourced health & safety service providers in support of the internal Health & Safety Advisory Team.

  • Ensure that all accidents and incidents occurring at the company premises or involving Travelodge employees are fully investigated to identify root causes and that appropriate corrective actions are implemented.

  • Ensure that the reporting requirements of the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations are fully met.

  • Ensure that all premises within the estate have appropriate emergency and crisis management plans and that Health and Safety Advisory staff are provided with appropriate training in the execution of these plans.

  • Ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place to ensure that the required standards of food hygiene are maintained.

  • Monitor and evaluate the accident and ill-health data to ensure trends or developments are identified and addressed at an early stage and that appropriate reports are prepared for the SSR Meetings.

  • Provide advice and support for police enquiries and security issues. 

  • Provide advice and support in relation to environmental management.

  • Support the Regional Advisors in providing support to their internal & external stakeholders

  • Facilitate sharing of best practice, representing the Health & Safety Team at regional and District meetings as required.

  • Provide reports and executive papers, and attend meetings as required

  • Participate in rota for emergency out of hours and weekend calls.

  • Undertake a range of project work to enhance and review the Working Safe system and support material. Support the implementation and compliance of any new changes to the Working Safe System.

Stakeholder management 

  • Build strong internal stakeholder relationships at all levels, promoting communication and innovation

  • Internal: H&S team, Operations team, TL support teams

  • External: Enforcement Officers, Contractors, Government Agencies

What we’ll expect from you


  • Ability to influence and persuade people at all levels within the organisation both informally and within the meeting and training environments with the ability to project a professional positive presence and an appropriate level of credibility.

  • Flexibility to travel nationally, full driving license.

  • Effective time management skills, able to work within tight time frames with ability to plan and prioritise, think clearly, strategically and succinctly.

  • Strong reporting and written skills maintaining accurate documentation & IT skills including Google Suite, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Good overall technical knowledge of health & safety, food safety and fire safety related matters.

  • Excellent team player, collaborating effectively, share best practice as part of a progressive fast paced management team with ability to effectively work alone.

  • NEBOSH National Diploma or equivalent and level 4 food safety. Candidates with exceptional relevant knowledge and experience may be considered but should be prepared to work towards obtaining a formal qualification.

  • Enthusiastic with a solution focused attitude.


  • CDM qualification

  • IOSH Chartered Member  

  • Eager to undertake personal development e.g. knowledge of health and safety, food safety, fire safety, security, DDA, DPA and environmental management.

  • Effective at establishing a good H&S culture within a budget brand.
