The job in a nutshell


  • The job holder will be responsible for the provision of expert fire safety information, advice and guidance at a national level, the measures they need to take to discharge their responsibilities with regard to fire safety for all guests, staff and others who are affected by Travelodge’s undertakings, and ensure compliance with relevant fire safety and H&S safety legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, British Standards, Guidance and best practice.

  • The post holder will work closely with a wide range of stakeholders including the Head of Capital Projects, Head of Maintenance Delivery, Head of Maintenance Support, Regional Directors, District Managers and other Senior Managers, along with external bodies such as the Travelodge’s Fire Service Primary Authority and other Fire Services and enforcement agencies on fire related matters.

  • They will also provide a national lead resource for the H&S Team on relevant serious or complex incident investigation and interaction with fire services and provide a service in line with nationally determined priorities and plans for Fire Safety.


What you’ll be doing:


  • Support District and Hotel Managers on an advisory basis on fire safety and related matters.

  • Support District and Hotel Managers in liaison with enforcement authorities, including Fire Safety Officers, Environmental Health Officers, and HSE Personnel on fire safety matters.

  • Support development and delivery of internal fire safety performance monitoring of hotel managers and district managers. Write clear reports with constructive actions & feedback on findings from every visit.

  • Provide regular National / Regional / District specific fire safety performance data and trend analysis.

  • Support Regional H&S Advisors as required carrying out fire safety incident investigations, and lead investigations for serious or complex fire safety incidents as required.

  • Design, facilitate and deliver fire safety related training programmes for delivery at all levels throughout the organisation.

  • Facilitate sharing of best practice, representing the Health & Safety Team at Regional and District meetings as required.

  • Ensure that no new (or newly acquired) hotel opens without the appropriate fire safety advice and support, including the full fire risk assessment checked, risk assessment of any blue flag issues and the necessary corrective actions being put in place.

  • Ensure that any unsafe act, condition or situation which in your judgement could compromise the business is immediately escalated to the Head of Health and Safety.

  • Provide monthly fire safety performance reports at the team meeting.

  • Actively promote a positive risk management culture within the business.

  • Act with integrity and full completion of necessary legal documentation.

  • Participate in rota for emergency out of hours and weekend calls.

  • Undertake a range of fire safety project work to enhance and review the Working Safe system and support material. Support the implementation and compliance of any new changes to the Working Safe System.

  • Provide advice and guidance on changes to fire safety legislation and industry best practice on tall and medium rise buildings and support the implementation of both mandatory controls and identified additional best practice controls

  • Build strong internal stakeholder relationships at all levels, promoting communication and innovation

  • Internal: H&S team, Operations team, TL support team

  • External: Enforcement Officers, Contractors, Government Agencies

What we’ll expect from you


Essential:

  • Ability to influence and persuade people at all levels within the organisation both informally and within the meeting and training environments with the ability to project a professional positive presence and an appropriate level of credibility.

  • Flexibility to travel nationally, full driving license.

  • Effective time management skills, able to work within tight time frames with ability to plan and prioritise, think clearly, strategically and succinctly.

  • Strong reporting and written skills maintaining accurate documentation & IT skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Strong technical knowledge of fire safety related matters.

  • Excellent team player, collaborating effectively, share best practice as part of a progressive fast paced management team with ability to effectively work alone.

  • Enthusiastic with a solution focused attitude.


Desirable: 

  • Member of Institute of Fire Engineers (or equivalent) or meet the minimum qualification and experience requirements for IFE membership

  • Experience of designing / delivering fire safety training 

  • Effective at establishing a good fire safety / H&S culture within a budget brand.
