The job in a nutshell

The Commercial Procurement vision is to deliver Better Procurement to fit with the Better Travelodge aims. The team ensures the delivery of goods and services at the best value for Travelodge at all times. The focus is assurance & sustainability of supply, quality and service at the lowest total cost for customers (both internal and external).

The role of the Head of Category is to provide category leadership and best practice to implement and embed Category Management, across designated categories of spend, under guidance by the Director of Procurement, to:

- Build stronger customer & business partnerships.

- Create a more capable, sustainable procurement.

- Develop a simpler, flexible, more agile commercial process.

- Learn and earn more with our partners & suppliers.

- Achieve bigger, better procurement outcomes at pace.

We have three Heads of Category roles, the areas of responsibility are:
  • Property & Facilities Management
  • Marketing, Corporate Services & IT
  • Customer Services and Food & Beverage

What you’ll be doing:

  • Create strong business partnerships across key stakeholders to understand the business, promote and drive commercial excellence. 

  • Develop Category strategies, plans and pipelines and change manage the category pipeline to deliver the agreed target benefits and improvements for a specific category ‘family for one or more of the following areas: Marketing, Corporate Services & IT / Customer Services & Food & Beverage / Property & FM Categories.

  • Agree Success measures and benefits tracking to help the business reduce spend levels, achieve savings targets, security of supply and betterment.

  • Take the commercial lead to ensure the necessary contractual arrangements and KPI’s and SLA’s are constructed, negotiated and agreed with all relevant parties.

  • Maximise use of all eProcurement tools and repositories to ensure document retention, knowledge management, lessons learnt and betterment.

  • Set up and manage governance, risk management, escalation, benefits tracking and reporting for your category.

  • Advocate use of all procurement policies and procedures and promote adoption, application, and compliance across the Category.

  • Agree and monitor objectives, success measures and development plans, providing coaching and mentoring to team members 

  • Support the Commercial Procurement Director in the delivery of the Transformation Roadmap Outcomes for Change to assure supply, reduce risk and deliver sustainable value.

Strong Stakeholder Management:

Internal – Business leads in all business functions, their Op Board directors and PA’s relevant to the Category, Supplier Management Team, Legal.

External: - Key Suppliers, Legal Agencies etc key to delivery of the Category plan.

Effectively manage, coach, and develop your team and cross-functional team members.

What we’ll expect from you


  • Developing and maturing the procurement environment establishing and driving process adherence and challenging stakeholders where appropriate.

  • Strong stakeholder management, influencing and communication skills.

  • Strategic and tactical approach to cost management, using innovative thinking to drive savings through means other than simple cost reduction.

  • Ability to assimilate information from multiple sources, to challenge and quickly assess validity and understanding of a situation.

  • Experience and confidence in supplier and contract negotiation.

  • Strong numeracy, negotiation, and communication (written and verbal) skills.

  • Procurement Best Practice including a track record of leading Category Planning, Category Management and Supplier Management using best in class tools and techniques.

  • Experience of building/improving supply chains for a large multi-site operation.

  • Ability to prioritise and reconcile conflicting demands, delivering multiple projects to deadlines, working at pace with focus on delivering tangible, measurable results.

  • Leading, managing and developing cross-functional teams.


  • Degree educated or equivalent and member of CIPS. 

  • Experience of managing a team with ability to coach and develop team members.

  • Hotel Industry experience.
