All at sea in Pompey

Embrace all things nautical in this bustling village on the outskirts of Portsmouth. Where better place to start than at the Historic Dockyard? See iconic ships the Mary Rose and Nelson's HMS Victory, and experience what it was like to be a sailor on the high seas. Have you got what it takes to scale the crow's nest?

Walk on air at the Spinnaker Tower

Soaring above Portsmouth Harbour, the Spinnaker offers amazing panoramic views of the south coast and Isle of Wight. The three viewing decks each offer something different. On the first, walk across the glass floor that makes you feel like you're floating. Stop off for refreshments in the second-floor cafe, and feel the breeze as you step out on to the open deck on the third floor.

Tread the path of literary greats

Have a peek at the small terraced house where Charles Dickens was born in 1812. The property has been lovingly restored, and you can see a collection of memorabilia, including his snuff box, inkwell and paper knife. At Portsmouth Museum you can explore the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who worked as a doctor in the city. Test your powers of detection with an interactive Sherlock Holmes mystery.
