Lights, Camera… Action! Movie and TV locations inspire Brits this Summer

  • Over half of young holidaymakers have chosen their staycation based on Harry Potter

  • Two-thirds of 25-34-year-olds have planned a staycation this summer, with over half stating a staycation will be their main holiday this year

  • Over 60% of Brits are planning a trip in the UK this summer

Young Brits lead the way this year for staycations, as the latest Travel Trends Report from Travelodge, which was commissioned by the hotel chain and surveyed 2,000 British adults, finds that over two-thirds of 25-34-year-olds (74%) have planned a UK holiday this summer, and over half (58%) claim this will be their main holiday. The Report also found that 60% of Brits across all age groups are planning a UK trip this summer.

Over half (51%) of young holidaymakers aged 25-34 have chosen their staycations based on the famous novel and movie series, Harry Potter, with destinations such as The Harry Potter Studios in Hertfordshire and Alnwick Castle in Northumberland inspiring the muggle-borns’ trips this year.

In contrast, a third of 55-64-year-olds (33%) have chosen their UK break based on iconic TV soap, Emmerdale and plan to head to the Yorkshire Dales.

Other popular destinations among all age groups included Birmingham, inspired by period crime TV drama Peaky Blinders (34%), closely followed by London, home of the nation’s favourite bear and movie franchise, Paddington (30%).

While we know the majority of Brits are planning a staycation, 47% claimed that this will be their main holiday in 2025, but for 25-34-year-olds specifically, 60% said they’re more likely to choose a staycation this year than any other.

Over a third of surveyed adults said cost was the main reason for choosing a UK break over going abroad this summer. Respondents also said they were choosing a staycation because of the convenience of staying in the UK and being closer to family and friends.

A Travelodge spokesperson said: “We’re a nation of telly lovers, so it’s no surprise to see iconic movies and shows like Harry Potter, Peaky Blinders, Paddington and Emmerdale inspiring UK holiday locations this summer. It’s great to see that younger people are looking to explore more of our wonderful country and with so many sights to see, Travelodge is proud to be situated in more than 600 locations — meaning we’re never far away should you need a place to rest your head.”

The Report found that coastal breaks are the go-to this summer, with 48% of adults saying a seaside holiday was just what they needed.

Brits also love a countryside break, as well as one that embraces our history. Just under half of 25-34-year-olds (48%) voted history and culture as one of their top reasons for a UK break this year.
