Over Half of Brits Say Time is Up for the Clocks Changing
- Travelodge surveyed over 100,000 people* to uncover the nation’s sleep habits
- 57% don’t think the clocks should change twice a year
- Almost 20% get less than five hours a night with screen time affecting the sleep of 13%
- One in seven (14%) only change their bedsheets once a month or less
As the darker mornings and nights approach, a new study from Travelodge, which surveyed over 100,000 people, has revealed 57% of the nation don’t think the clocks should change twice a year .
It showed that 32% of Brits prefer lighter evenings and want to keep British Summer Time (BST) permanently, and 25% favour lighter mornings, wanting permanent Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The remaining 43% of people said they like the change that the clocks springing forward and falling back brings.
Modern-day stress is revealed to be keeping us up at night as almost 20% of the nation gets less than five hours of sleep each night. Over half (54%) blamed stress or anxiety for a broken night or less sleep than they would like, while screen time affected the sleep of 13% of people.
Another contributor to sleepless nights could be lying right under our noses, or rather, under our duvets, as Travelodge found 22% of people are sleeping on mattresses over eight years old, which are potentially beyond the end of their lifespan, this could explain why 12% said they struggle to sleep due to an uncomfortable mattress.
The survey also revealed that 14% of Brits confessed to changing their bedsheets just once a month or less, but a more fastidious 46% said they change them weekly.
While the majority of people prefer to rest their head on two pillows, 13% said they need even more support, preferring to be propped up by three or more.
A Travelodge spokesperson said: “The nation may be divided on the clock change, but whether you’re team summer or team winter time, one thing for sure is stress, screens and mattresses past their prime are all potentially stealing our precious sleep.
“We believe that everybody deserves a great night’s kip, so they’re ready for whatever the new day brings. In our next generation rooms, now available in over 65% of our hotels, you’ll find blackout curtains and king-sized comfort in our Dreamer beds to help you recharge.”
