Floodlit racing at Chelmsford City Racecourse

Situated in the heart of Essex around five miles south of Braintree, Chelmsford City Racecourse is the UK's newest racecourse. With its full racing calendar, the racecourse has also hosted top music acts including Madness, Jools Holland and Simply Red. Its champagne flute-glass shaped floodlights make for elegant night-time racing, and the course is one of only five floodlit all-weather tracks in the country.

What to do and see in Essex

Essex is full of interesting towns, shops, attractions and beaches with lots for everyone to see and do. Among the lovely towns to have a nosey around is the ancient settlement of Great Dunmow, around 15 minutes' drive away, which has a great selection of independent shops and cafes. Lee Valley Regional Park Authority is under an hour away by car and well worth the trip for sporty types as it's home to three venues from the London 2012 Olympic Games.
