A scenic spot at the University of the Highlands and Islands

The university is made up of 13 colleges and research centres dotted around northern Scotland. The largest is Inverness College in the Highlands' capital city. A shiny new main building was opened in 2015, which is where most students and staff are based.

Visitors to Inverness get the best of both worlds, with a bustling city and the tranquillity of the great outdoors right on their doorstep.

Watch a performance at Eden Court

Inverness has plenty of pubs and bars where you can meet for a drink at night, and many serve up traditional music and ceilidhs as well as comforting beverages.

If you want to see a show or movie, head to Eden Court, one of Scotland's best arts centres. Here you'll find two theatres, a couple of cinemas, dance and drama studios, as well as galleries, exhibitions and a cafe. See everything from The Nutcracker to Legally Blonde.

Ski or swim in the Cairngorms

Beyond the city, the surrounding landscape is nature at its best, with rolling hills, snow-peaked mountains and white sandy beaches to take your breath away. To the south-east lies the Cairngorms, the UK's largest national park. In winter, take to the slopes to ski or snowboard, and in warmer weather mountain bike, walk or hit the water to windsurf or swim.
