A breath of fresh air in quaint Deal

With its smuggling history, quaint alleys, award-winning high street, bracing seafront and elegant pier, the coastal town of Deal in Kent has so much to offer. Around half an hour's drive north of Dover, Deal also boasts two Tudor castles. You can walk between Deal and Walmer Castles, the latter being home to an original pair of Wellington boots. Stroll around the winding streets, and head to the seafront for a brisk walk along the pebbles before having lunch in the restaurant on the pier. Other local attractions include the quirky Timeball Tower, a Victorian Greenwich meantime signalling device which is now a museum, and Betteshanger Park where you can hire a bike or have a go at fossil hunting.

Up the coast to Sandwich

The pretty town of Sandwich is an easy drive or get there in five minutes by train. Admire the picturesque timbered architecture, head to the beautiful Salutation Gardens or take a river boat trip to Nearby Richborough Roman Fort or to see the seals and birdlife in the estuary.

See the white cliffs of Dover
