The sport of kings doesn't have to be regal

Newcastle Racecourse, to the north of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, is a traditional flat-racing course but has a very relaxed atmosphere - meaning no dress code is enforced. This is perhaps in part a concession to the weather of the area - warm clothing is recommended for the most part of the season - but largely to foster an atmosphere of inclusivity and, overall, a good day out at the races.

Take in a round of golf

The racecourse is surrounded by three golfing facilities - the Gosforth Golf Club, Parklands Golf Club and the Northumberland Golf Club. All are within a few minutes' drive, with the NGC perhaps the most impressive - it regularly hosts national championships and qualifiers, including for the Open. Gosforth, meanwhile, is a real hidden gem.

Hit the Toon

Newcastle's vibrant city centre is just a 15-minute drive away, or 30 minutes by bus, and boasts plenty to see and do - from shopping trips, cafes and restaurants to museums, galleries and landmarks. Particularly recommended are the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, the Discovery Museum and the Centre for Life. The nightlife, too, is exceptional.
