Get your skates on at Britain’s best ice rinks

Temperatures are dropping, fairy lights are twinkling and the festive season is just around the corner. Time to layer up and glide into winter in style with a spot of ice skating.

The UK’s best outdoor ice rinks are once again open for action, but get your skates on – you have a limited time to enjoy this seasonal delight.

1. Somerset House, London

Outdoor skating is big business in the capital, with London boasting a huge choice of beautiful ice rinks within royal parks, museums and stately homes. Yet the original rink at Somerset House, founded in 2000, still stands tall as the most stunning location to skate in the city. The rink is popular with kids and families during the day and there are a choice of skate schools catering to various ages and abilities. When the sun sets the courtyard is filled with couples gliding arm-in-arm under the stars and enjoying champagne and truffles and other apres-ski delicacies. Stay in one of our London hotels to be nearby.

2. Winter Wonderland, Cardiff

Set on the City Hall Lawn against the backdrop of the impressive Edwardian university buildings, Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland is a fantastic festive treat for all ages. The outdoor ice rink is open from 9th November to 7th January, and will be the focal point of the city’s traditional New Year’s celebrations – Calennig to the locals. Families can hire a Fun Skate penguin to help young skaters under 10 keep their balance as they find their feet on the ice and there are great discounts for larger groups if you’d like to plan a party. After a high-octane session trying not to fall over, relax with some mulled wine at the bierkeller, wander around the alpine village or enjoy some warming Welsh grub in the ringside cafe. There’s also a ferris wheel for breath-taking views of the Welsh capital, live music and Victorian shopping arcades just around the corner for a fun-packed winter weekend. Book a hotel in central Cardiff to be nearby.

3. The Ark, Poole Park, Bournemouth

If the British weather decides to take a turn for the worse, fear not; the UK has plenty of cosy indoor ice rinks to keep you happy. You can find one of the country’s newest rinks in the heart of Dorset’s historic Poole Park. A local couple invested into their dream of creating modern free-play activities for big kids and little kids to enjoy together. The indoor ice rink offers parent and toddler sessions, ‘golden blade’ skating for over 60s with a free coffee afterwards, and family club nights each Friday. You can look forward to disco dancing on ice, fun in the three-story huge soft-play area and a delicious buffet to start an amazing winter weekend. And you never know when you might sneak a peek of Tux, The Ark’s resident penguin. Book into one of our Bournemouth hotels for a great location this winter.
