Travelodge exchanges contracts for a new development in Abbey Wood

Travelodge, the UK’s first budget hotel brand, which operates over 630 hotels across the UK and Spain, has exchanged contracts to develop a new hotel in Abbey Wood, south east London.

The new, 132-room hotel will be delivered as part of the regeneration of The Abbey Arms Pub, creating a new high-quality, great-value accommodation option for visitors to the area. The development is being delivered in partnership with Uplift Developments Ltd.

Located adjacent to Abbey Wood railway station, the new Travelodge will benefit from excellent transport connections, including direct Elizabeth line services into central London, as well as strong local bus links. The hotel will support the continued regeneration of Abbey Wood, which has been identified as an Opportunity Area within the London Plan and forms part of the Thamesmead Strategic Development Location.

The six-storey hotel has been designed to complement the surrounding area and will bring new employment opportunities to the local community. Once complete, the hotel will provide a convenient base for both business and leisure travellers visiting Abbey Wood and the wider south east London area including Canary Wharf.

Tony O’Brien, UK Development Director at Travelodge, said: “We are delighted to have exchanged contracts for a new Travelodge hotel in Abbey Wood, which will support the continued growth and regeneration of this well-connected part of London.

“As one of the stops on the Elizabeth Line, Abbey Wood has excellent transport links, with direct services into Canary Wharf in 10 minutes, Liverpool Street in 16 minutes and Bond Street in 23 minutes. This new hotel will provide high-quality, great-value accommodation for business and leisure travellers visiting the local area and central London. Travelodge has made a long-term commitment and looks forward to creating new opportunities for the local community.”

Jasdeep Mann, Director of Uplift Developments Ltd., commented: “As a local resident who grew up in Greenwich borough, I am delighted we have been able to agree on terms with the first national brand hotel in Abbey Wood. We hope this marks the beginning of the promised regeneration of Wilton Road.

“This new project is a massive win for our community. A brand new Travelodge hotel will be built right next to Elizabeth line train station. Even better, the Abbey Arms pub will get a complete makeover, and a nice new coffee offering, saving it for generations to come.”

Travelodge now operates over 600 hotels throughout the UK, with a requirement to open more than 300 additional locations.
