14th February 2005

Travelodge, the UK’s fastest growing budget hotel chain, has opened its second hotel in Manchester city centre, bringing more affordable accommodation to one of the UK’s largest cities. The 116-bedroom hotel, located on Great Ancoats Street, will offer room rates from just £26 per night for either a double or family room. The new hotel boosts the total number of Travelodge’s in the Manchester region to 4.

Staff at the new hotel decided to dedicate their first day in business to raising money for local children’s charity Francis House and took to the streets with collecting buckets. In the evening they held a Bugsey Malone themed fancy dress party at the new hotel for some of the children currently in the hospice and their brothers and sisters. The children were greeted with a red carpet entrance and when it was time to go home a stretch limousine arrived to pick them all up.

Shadia Mather, a patient at Francis House Hospice, officially opened the Travelodge. Her mother, Debbie Mather, commented: “I think it’s fantastic that the Travelodge team at Manchester decided to raise money for a local charity that does such valuable work. Francis House needs every penny, as it doesn’t receive any government funding. We had a great time at the party and it gave Shadia a real boost, she was quite overwhelmed at officially opening the hotel.”

Hayley Davies, Manchester Ancoats Travelodge manager, commented: “Travelodge is extremely proud to have invested into another fantastic city centre location. The Manchester region continues to grow in popularity as a destination, with over 84 million visitors each year, and our existing hotel just couldn’t cope with the demand. I’m sure both business and leisure travellers will be delighted that Travelodge has again provided the city with affordable hotel accommodation.”

Manchester Ancoats Travelodge started trading on Monday 14th February with 100% occupancy for the first night and great figures for the rest of the week. 24 local people were recruited to help run the new hotel. Hayley Davies, Manchester Ancoats Travelodge Manager, said: “We were totally overwhelmed by the response we received from local residents on the recruitment day held in January. Over 100 applicants were interviewed and we filled all the positions as well as recruiting more staff for our existing hotel in central Manchester.”

All Travelodge bedrooms offer a comfortable setting with a king size bed, en-suite bathroom with power shower, colour TV, free tea and coffee making facilities and an in-room entertainment system that offers pay on demand movie, telephone and Internet service. A breakfast bag service is available to all guests and can be delivered to their room between 7am to 9am; otherwise it can be purchased from reception at any time throughout the day.
