Today, Wales’s first budget hotel chain, Travelodge, celebrates 32 years of trading in Wales by opening its first hotel at Rhyl beach.  The company’s 576th Travelodge, Rhyl Seafront Travelodge, represents an investment of £5 million for its landlord, Denbighshire County Council, and has created 25 new jobs within the community.

Rhyl Seafront Travelodge is the town’s first branded hotel to be located at the beach and offers sea view rooms from £29. It is the company’s 27th hotel in Wales and was officially opened by theChair of Denbighshire County Council, Councillor Peter Scott, Chris Ruane, MP for the Vale of Clwyd, The Mayor of Rhyl, Councillor Mrs Win Mullen-James and David Handyside-Cook, Travelodge District Manager for Wales.

The new hotel which was built in 21 months, features 69 family and four accessible rooms (all with sea view rooms), an onsite restaurant called the Bar Café which offers a great value, breakfast, dinner and drinks menu as well as an on-site car-park.

At the official opening of Rhyl Seafront Travelodge, the company also announced that Wales is a key development area for the business and that it is actively looking for a further seven hotel sites which includes four holiday hotspots. Locations include:  Aberystwyth, Penarth, Pwllheli, Swansea, Tenby, Torfaen/Blaenau and Wrexham.

Collectively this expansion programme represents an investment of £45 million for third party investors and a creation of 200 new jobs.

David Handyside-Cook, Travelodge District Manager for Wales, said: “We are delighted to open our first hotel in Rhyl at the beach and offer all customers  sea view rooms. Our new 576th hotel is a great addition to the estate and will certainly help attract new visitors to the town, which is great news for the local economy.  Our research shows Travelodge customers spend double their room rate with local businesses which equates to a multimillion spend annually.”

“As we look to the future, Wales is attracting record visitors numbers as a popular Staycation destination, however there remains a shortage of good quality, and great value accommodation in key areas. To meet this demand we are actively looking for a further seven hotel sites which includes four popular holiday hotspots. This includes:  Aberysthwth, Penarth, Pwllheli, Swansea, Tenby, Torfaen / Blaunau Gwent and Wrexham.Collectively this expansion programme would represent an investment of £45 million for third party investors and would create 200 new jobs across Wales.”

Cllr Hugh Evans OBE, leader of Denbighshire County Council, said: “I am pleased to see the opening of Rhyl Seaside Travelodge, which is yet more good news for Rhyl, especially with the creation of 25 jobs. Residents and visitors can see the regeneration in Rhyl and the real difference it is making to the town.

“Along with SC2, which opens in April, and work on the Rhyl Masterplan, there is more investment ongoing in Rhyl. The Council is committed to the regeneration of the town which will create jobs and support the economy of Denbighshire as a whole.”

Speaking at the opening, Chris Ruane, MP for Vale of Clwyd, said:  “I am delighted that Travelodge is part of the regeneration of Rhyl seaside and is opening a new hotel on the seafront, bringing new jobs and encouraging more visitors to the area.  I hope this will inspire more people to come and enjoy what this traditional seaside town has to offer and the great attractions, old and new, that we have in the area.  I wish Travelodge a successful future.”

Rhyl Seaside Travelodge is being managed by Sophie Owen, who is one of hundreds of Travelodge staff members who joined the company via an entry level position and has successfully climbed the career ladder into management.

Sophie started at Travelodge in 2012 as a receptionist and within 24 months climbed the career ladder into management via the company’s successful in-house development programme called Aspire. During the last few years Sophie has gained a wealth of management experience by working across a range of different size Travelodge hotels in: Scarborough, Chester, Lancaster and Caernarfon.

Earlier this month, Sophie was overwhelmed to receive over 500 applications for the 25 roles available at her new Rhyl Seafront hotel.

Sophie Owen, Hotel Manager, Rhyl Seafront Travelodge said:  “I am very proud to be managing Rhyl’s first Travelodge hotel and it is always a good day at work when you have a picturesque sea view to look at. We have had a great opening and we were sold out for the half term holidays plus rooms are selling like hot Welsh cakes for the Easter and summer holidays. Customers love the amazing views from their rooms and what a great start to the day to have a cup of tea, in your luxurious Travelodge Dreamer bed whilst looking out to Rhyl beach.”
