On the border in Grafton

Deep in the Cheshire countryside, Grafton is a tiny village close to the English-Welsh border, so you can explore two countries in one day here.

A stroll across Farndon Bridge to Holt on the banks of the River Dee takes you into Wales. While you’re there, inspect the ruins of Holt Castle and St Chad’s Church. The churchyard contains the graves of four British soldiers who fought in World War One.

Enjoy a day at the races

You’re Near a couple of good racecourses in this part of the world if you fancy a flutter. Bangor-on-Dee stages 15 jump meetings a year in picturesque surroundings next to the riverbank, while Chester Racecourse is nestled on the edge of the city walls. It’s the oldest course in Britain, with racing here dating all the way back to the 16th century.

Go shopping in Chester

With its unique medieval two-tiered shops, Chester is a delightful place to indulge in a spot of retail therapy. Discover specialist food stores, jewellery, fashion and unique gifts in The Rows, where shoemakers and ironmongers once sold their wares. For movie and music memorabilia, head to Central City, and for gifts with a difference, visit Harriet & Dee.
