Walk the Peaks from Wirksworth

Wirksworth is a perfect base for exploring one of England's best-loved national parks: the Peak District, just 15 minutes to the north. Take on the park's craggy peaks for stunning views as far as Manchester and Wales, or visit historic Chatsworth House, home to the Cavendish family since 1549. The Peak District is also dotted with charming villages - unwind after a long walk with a locally brewed ale at The Old Bowling Green in Winster, not far from Wirksworth.

Choose Chesterfield

Only 35 minutes' drive north of Wirksworth, the large town of Chesterfield is perfect for a day out. Culture vultures should check out Chesterfield Museum and Art Gallery, which charts the history of the town through objects dating from the Roman period. Chesterfield also nurtures a vibrant food scene, with Italian, Japanese, Thai and Indian restaurants dotted across the compact centre.
