A Tudor-style knees-up at Newland Hall

Visiting for a wedding? Situated four miles west of Chelmsford, this sprawling country estate has a large picturesque 15th-century Tudor manor house as its centrepiece - complete with moat. It's surrounded by bloom-filled gardens, lakes and miles of rolling Essex countryside. Set in Oaklands Park, this fascinating free museum charting the history of Chelmsford offers a pick-and-mix of exhibitions, from collections of fossils and coins to the history of the Essex Regiment. Highlights include a live beehive and the Bright Sparks Exhibition, which looks at how key industrial pioneers such as Marconi, Hoffmann and Marriage established factories in the city.

Catch the train into London

Trains run regularly from Chelmsford to Liverpool Street Station, so you can be among some of London's most famous sights within 35 minutes.
