A blast from the past at Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre

Lovers of brutalist architecture will lap up the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, the first covered space of its kind on its opening in 1965, but they should do so quickly - it's earmarked for demolition to make way for a bigger, bolder and brighter centre for this South London site. Expect a new pedestrianised area, market square, new homes and retail areas to spring up during the next few years.

Imperial War Museum - heroes and horrors

Approximately a mile away from the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre is the Imperial War Museum, which charts the experience of modern warfare for soldiers and citizens from the First World War to the present day. There are also temporary exhibits to capture the imagination, as well as art galleries featuring works by official war artists made in the field.

Borough Market - a foodie's delight

Foodies should take a break from spending all their hard-earned cash at the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre by taking a trip to Borough Market, just south of the River Thames. It's been the capital's premier food market since the 13th century, and still packs and impressive lunch today.
