An Olympic day out

Just 13 minutes by car or 35 minutes by train from Wanstead in north east London, the stunning Queen Elizabeth II Olympic Park makes the perfect day out. See the Athletes Village and the iconic Copper Box Arena, before ascending ArcelorMittal Orbit, Britain largest piece of public art, which also contains the world's tallest and longest slide - kids will love it (from �5.50 for children). For hip bars and pubs, cross the River Lee and make the short walk to Hackney Wick, the capital's coolest post-industrial hangout.

In less than a 15 minutes, you can be gazing at the finest works from one of Britain's best loved 19th-century artists. The William Morris Gallery is located in Walthamstow, north east London, in sumptuous Grade II listed architecture and extensive parkland. The gallery, which was Musuem of the year in 2013, houses prints, fabrics, rugs, stained and glass and painted tiles by the Arts and Crafts master along with many of his contemporaries.
