Head out into Hexham

Hexham Racecourse is just a short drive south of the charming market town of Hexham in Northumberland. Take in historic Hexham Abbey, built in its current form during the 12th century and home to fine stained glass artwork. Hexham Old Gaol is an ancient 14th century prison that's now home to a museum with fine collections of weapons and armour. Film buffs should head to the Forum Cinema, a community-run playhouse offering the latest releases and leftfield cultural screenings.

Tour Northumberland National Park

Just over half an hour's drive north of Hexham Racecourse sits the sprawling Northumberland National Park. It's home to the renowned Pennine Way, a 268-mile National Trail taking in rugged countryside and picturesque lakes. Most visitors make a beeline for the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Hadrian's Wall, begun in 122AD by a Roman emperor for protection from warring Picts to the north.

A night on the Toon in Newcastle

Hexham is within easy reach of the city of Newcastle, just 35 minutes by train. Renowned for its vibrant nightlife, head to Bigg Market for bustling bars and clubs, or further north to Jesmond for student happy hours. World Headquarters is one the city's best club venues, hosting big name DJs in a striking industrial space. Or Boiler Shop, a multidisciplinary arts and music hub that was revamped in 2016 as part of a �200m investment in the Stephenson Quarter.
