Exciting times ahead for Birmingham Smithfield

Once a thriving market site, this area of Birmingham city centre is set to undergo huge changes in the coming years, with homes, shops and entertainment venues planned to breathe new life into it.

At its heart will be Festival Square, a vast new public space that will include museums, restaurants and family zones. The development will also create new indoor markets in a nod to the area's vibrant past.

Shop at the Bullring

Smithfield is right next to Birmingham's main shopping area. You'll find your high-street favourites in New Street and the revamped Bullring, which has everything from Accessorize to Zara. The iconic Selfridges building - inspired by a Paco Rabanne sequinned dress - will certainly catch your eye.

If you're after something a bit different, visit LinkStreet, a Bullring walkway dedicated to pop-up stores.

Wander around Digbeth

A short walk from the Bullring takes you to Digbeth, Birmingham's creative quarter. Cafe culture, street art and hipster shops have transformed this industrial area. Don't miss the Custard Factory for pop-ups, galleries and festivals.

Some of the old pubs here are thought to be the former haunts of the infamous Peaky Blinders. If you can't get enough of the hit BBC drama you can take a walking tour of Digbeth to see where the real 1920s gangsters once lived.
