Remember those few books you read over and over as a kid? There’s something magical that happens when children first start discovering the word of literature, and the Bath Children’s Literature Festival is all about helping them on that journey. The biggest event in the UK of its kind, this festival is a brilliant time for the whole family. Sponsored by The Telegraph and Waterstones, it promises lots of fun and plenty of education too. Here’s everything you need to know, from who to hear to why your kids will want to go:

When?

The literature festival runs from 26th September until 5th October, so you’ve got plenty of dates to choose from. Just book into our Bath hotel ahead of time.

Where?

With over 80 scheduled events, the children’s festival is spread out all over the city centre. But the primary locations are the Guildhall, the Mission Theatre, and the Bath Central Library, which will be hosting the ‘Festival Den’ for the full two weeks. With a dressing-up chest and all sorts of fun activities to join in, this is the first place to drop in on.

Who?

Many of the big names in children’s literature will be turning out for the festival. Watch out for Lauren Child, Andy Stanton, and Benjamin Zephaniah among others.

What (to see)?

The program of events is extensive, and ranges from readings and workshops to sing-a-longs, games, quizzes, and all sorts of hands-on activities. Dream up outlandish robots at the ‘Comics… OF THE FUTURE!’ event on the 27th September, or join in the big children’s ‘Book Swap’ the same day.

Learn how to turn nightmares into stories with Ross Montgomery’s workshop on writing about adventure and fear on Sunday 28th.

On 4th October, there’s an unmissable ‘Secret Kingdom Party’ for anyone aged 4 to 7, while the teenagers get to hear all about David Almond’s new young adult novel in the talk he’ll be giving that afternoon.

Sunday 5th comes with the opportunity to learn to draw Harry Potter, with the legendary series’ latest illustrator, Jonny Duddle, as well as an elephant-themed celebration for Elmer the Elephant’s 25th birthday.

How?

With so much going on, you’ll need a few days in Bath to get to your choice of events. So book a room in our Bath hotel to be in the beautiful Roman city for all the festivities. When you’re not at bookish celebrations, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy around the town. Why not have a look around the Roman baths, visit the American Museum, or book tickets to one of the multiple theatres while you’re there too?

Why?

Apart from promising a whole lot of fun, this festival has a real mission of doing good as well. Getting kids into reading young can change everything for them: kick-starting their imagination, making school more fun, and opening up their world of experience. Whether your children are reluctant readers or little bookworms, bring them along. A few days of literary fun is sure to encourage them to spend more time with their noses in books.
