3 Things To Do In Windsor

The Berkshire town is well known for its royal links, thanks to Windsor Castle. It’s the official residence of the Queen and has been a royal residence for over 1000 years.

With this come impressive events such as the Royal Windsor Horse Show and nearby Royal Ascot. But there’s loads more to keep you entertained in this picturesque part of the UK.

And all just 25 miles southwest of London: a 30-minute train journey.

So why not check out these lesser-known Windsor activities? Oh, and don’t forget to book a room in our Windsor Travelodge before you get here!

1. Horse around and learn to play polo

The polo set are well entrenched in this part of the country, with the Royal Borough playing host to a number of the world’s top polo players and events.

But why not have a go yourself? There’s more to polo than quaffing champers on the sidelines.

Get in touch with Cool Hooves Polo, based in the Berkshire club, for lessons. They’re all about opening the game to anyone who wants to get a taste for it, from seasoned riders to those of us that have never set foot in a stirrup.

You can learn all the rules and tactics in a few individual lessons or turn your mates’ weekend away into a real experience with a group class.

2. Dine in style with Windsor’s foodies

Close enough to the bright lights of London, but far enough to boast peaceful, open views, Windsor is a celebrity chef’s dream when it comes to opening a restaurant.

Antony Worrall Thompson has opened the Windsor Grill , which boasts steaks and seafood to die for.

While the nearby village of Bray boasts not just one, but two 3-star Michelin restaurants: Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck (of ‘Sound of the Sea’ fame) and Michel Roux’s Waterside Inn.

3. Explore Windsor’s undiscovered Olympic past

Book a walking tour and find out all about the Olympic heritage Windsor locals are so very proud of.

Find out why the official marathon route is 26 miles and 385 yards (we won’t spoil it, but it began in 1908 and has something to do with the Princess of Wales and her children).

And explore The Long Walk where the 1948 Olympics road cycle race took place.

So if this hasn’t convinced you, we don’t know what will. There is, of course, the small matter of Windsor Castle and its famous Great Kitchen, huge St George’s Chapel, THAT doll’s house, and 13 acres of lush grounds. Just in case you’ve got spare time!

And remember, our Windsor Travelodge is the perfect place to base yourself while exploring this stunning British town.
