Best St George’s Days in England

While England’s very own St George may not enjoy the same fanfare that his saint mates across the borders do, you can’t deny that our dragon-slaying hero is the star of one very cool tale.

And people all around England have done their very best over the last few years to turn St George’s Day celebrations into an event to remember (even if we don’t get a day off)! So this year, make sure you taste a bit of the action – from Birmingham to Nottingham. It’s time to celebrate St George.

1. St George’s Day Festival, Birmingham

You can always count on Brum for a good knees-up and this year’s St George’s Day Festival is no different. The city’s Chamberlain and Victoria Squares hold 2015’s festivities on Sunday 19th April, making an uplifting end to a weekend break.

There’s going to be loads of family-friendly entertainment, including comedy, live music and even a special act commemorating ‘Englishness’ produced by a local school. Don’t miss the petting zoo and Morris dancing in Victoria Square or the knights in armour doing battle at Chamberlain Square! The kids won’t want to, trust us.

If you’re thinking ‘By George, that sounds like one hell of a party’, check out our Birmingham Travelodge for the perfect place to rest your head after a hard day’s celebrating.

2. Feast of St George, Trafalgar Square, London

On Saturday 25th April, Trafalgar Square will be awash with white and red as the legend of St George takes over one of England’s most famous landmarks.

There will be loads of free St George-themed activities, plenty for the kids to do, stalls to keep you well fed and watered, and much, much more at the Mayor of London’s annual feast. Last year’s event saw new music acts, Maypole dancing and local food and drink galore.

So if hog roasts and homemade pies, live music, and both indoor and outdoor games for the family sound right up your street, why not make a weekend of it and stay at a London Travelodge?

3. St George’s Day Grand Parade, Nottingham

Organised by none other than The Royal Society of St George, Nottingham’s low-key parade is a good one to bring the children to.

Beginning at noon on Thursday 23rd April, the procession will start at the Forest Recreation Ground and take in Mansfield Road on its way to the Old Market Square, where you can’t miss the gigantic St George’s flag in front of the Council House.

Of course, the weekend wouldn’t be complete without a bit of a party.

Book a room in our Nottingham Travelodge if you want to hear one-time Mercury Prize nominees Portico at the famous Rock City on the Saturday. Or get the laughs in at Glee Club instead as four top stand-ups show off their stuff.
