3 Top Chinese New Year Celebrations

When it comes to dramatic celebrations, there aren’t many that come close to Chinese New Year.

This year’s big day falls on Thursday 19th February, with 2015 being the Year of the Sheep (or Ram).

In China, New Year traditionally opens the start of the farming year, but the main idea is to get together with family and begin the year with good fortune. Here in the UK, parades and special events take over the streets with vibrant displays and plenty of yummy treats.

Looking for lion dances, music, arts and crafts or fantastic food? Then join in with the family at these three destinations and bring in the Year of the Sheep in style.

1. The next best thing in London

It’s said that the capital boasts the largest Chinese New Year celebrations outside Asia. So if you’re looking for the real thing, but can’t afford the airfare, London is the destination for you.

Wish friends, family and anyone else who will listen a Kung Hei Fat Choi (Happy New Year) at the main stage in Trafalgar Square, where local artists, performances, lion teams and New Year food will be the order of the day. The main parade will be on 22nd February, so book your hotel with that in mind: it’s red and gold and wild.

Finish the day in Chinatown (where else?) for some of the best Chinese food in the UK. You won’t want to miss the succulent fish dishes or golden spring rolls that are New Year classics. Nestled between Trafalgar Square and Shaftesbury Avenue, Chinatown is bang in the centre of the action and not far from our Marylebone hotel.

If you’re visiting family, check if there’s a London Travelodge close by. You won’t want to roll far after a big reunion dinner.

2. From Beijing to Brum

If you’re visiting the Midlands, Birmingham’s Chinese New Year celebrations are bright and noisy – and free. The heart of the city turns into a wonderland of traditional and contemporary fun, as thousands of visitors descend on the city for the events. Be sure to taste the sweet chestnut rice cakes and special dumplings if you want a good start to the year.

From lion dancing to chopstick masterclasses, food to fireworks, Brum’s offering really does have something for everyone, so why not book your Birmingham Travelodge today?

3. Dragons in Manchester

Don’t worry; those up north can get in on the fun too with Manchester’s magnificent Chinese New Year celebrations.

With a famous Dragon Parade, plenty of tasty (and lucky)culinary options and the irreplaceable fireworks display, this year’s festivities will tick every box.

Look out for the traditional red lanterns lighting up the sky, a market featuring over 50 stalls and a fairground too!

Our Manchester Travelodge is the perfect place to sleep off those New Year dumplings, so don’t delay: plan your Chinese New Year on your lunch break.
