There are some days of the year where everything just feels right. Days that we eagerly count down to on the calendar. Days where we wake up extra early because we can’t sleep. You know, days like Christmas Day, birthdays and National Dessert Day…

If you aren’t already aware (firstly, shame on you), Tuesday 14th October is one of the greatest days of the calendar year. It’s a day where you can have cake for breakfast… and lunch, and dinner. Forget your greens, it’s National Dessert Day!

But how do you pick what desserts to enjoy in these 24 hours to end all 24 hours?

Read on for some of the finest sweet treats this fair isle has to offer.

Super sticky toffee pudding

Ashness Bridge over river in the lake district Classic Cumbria view

A divinely rich national dessert said to originate in Cartmel in the Lake District. Plump with butter and meltiness, this is the real thing after a cold day hiking in the drizzle. Best eaten with friends from a good-sized bowl. Just don’t fight over whether or not it should contain dates. Book our hotel in Kendal and you can also squeeze in a Kendal mint cake. Did you know they were accidentally ‘invented’ when a confectioner made a mistake with his glacier mints?

Charming Chelsea bun

chelsea buns or cinnamon buns Chelsea buns

One of Britain’s oldest, and best-loved cakes, this sticky soft delicacy was supposedly invented in the 1700s at the Bun House in Chelsea.

If you fancy visiting the home of this delicious baked good, why not sleep off your food coma in our Fulham Travelodge and check out what else West London has to offer (other than Made in Chelsea!)? With two local football clubs, enticing shops and tempting restaurants on almost every corner – plus kid-friendly museums a couple of Tube stops away – your weekend trip is practically made.

Fabulous flummery pudding

A name that immediately conjures thoughts of sweetness and light, the flummery pudding was originally a Welsh dish. It was traditionally made with oatmeal cooked to a sticky consistency, but can now be enjoyed in all sorts of guises. Try yours topped with whipped cream.

Our Cardiff Travelodge will offer you a warm welcome if you fancy exploring Wales and taking in some of the sights (as well as the cakes). See fine performances at the Cardiff Millennium Centre, and venture out to the coast for some of this island’s most glorious scenery. You can even catch live shows of A Child’s Christmas in Wales in Swansea till 10th December.

Here today, scone tomorrow

Where would this country be without the humble scone? The cream tea is what Britain was built on and if there’s a better way to spend an afternoon, I’m yet to find it.

Dating back centuries, the marriage of scone, cream and jam is the stuff of dreams and where better to try it this month than in Devon – the home of the cream tea. Stay in our Paignton Travelodge and you can wander along the seafront or chase the kids round the Paignton Zoo for some exercise.
