The London Lord Mayor’s Show has survived the medieval plague, the blitz during the Second World War and even the great selfie epidemic of 2013. Whatever happens in the capital, this is one show that must go on. As it has done for 798 years – quite amazing, really.

It’s one of the globe’s most famous pageants, and a London event without a certain shaggy-haired blonde in sight. Get ready for gilded floats, eye-catching outfits, marching bands and hundreds of glossy horses.

What is it?

On Saturday November 8th, the newly elected Lord Mayor will begin the grand procession round his domain at around 11am. The route goes from the City via St Paul’s Cathedral, finally returning to the embankment and the beautiful surroundings of the River Thames by 2.30pm.

Many visitors to town will take the opportunity to stay in a London Travelodge and see the sights for the weekend. It’s also a top excuse to get in some early Christmas shopping and take part in a world-renowned parade.

So if you do fancy witnessing this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show, just what can you expect?

The route

Join the 500,000 people who line the route – don’t just watch on your mobile. Leaving Mansion House at 11am, the ancient wicker guardians of London, Gog and Magog, will lead the procession. They’re closely followed by more than an hour’s worth of costumed parading to wow the crowds.

In the meantime, the State Coach arrives at Mansion House to pick up the new Lord Mayor in full regalia, joining the back of the procession and following it to St Paul’s for a short blessing. They’ll then continue down Ludgate Hill on their way to the Royal Courts at Aldwych.

Here they’ll swear an oath of loyalty to the Crown before heading back to Mansion House at around 1pm.

Free tours

At this point, revellers have the opportunity to enjoy free guided tours from a number of professional city guides who are dotted around. They’ll show you all the weird and wonderful attractions the oldest part of the capital has to offer. Trust us, you’ll be well occupied until the show reaches its crescendo – the fireworks.

Spectacular fireworks

At 5.15pm on the day of the procession, the London sky will light up with a stunning fireworks display over the river. Celebrating the new Lord Mayor and ringing in another good year (we hope!), this is a splendid end to one of London’s best-loved events.

So if you’re looking for a piece of history, a different way to explore what the capital has to offer and a weekend away this November – what are you waiting for? Book your London Travelodge, get packing and enjoy this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show.
